The “Taverne” local heritage museum brings Dirlewang’s eventful local history to life with numerous archaeological finds and historical exhibits. Together with the architectural histories of its churches and chapels, it creates a clear cultural focus. For planning your stay, the water-treading facility offers a different emphasis, one explicitly shaped by the seasons.

Local History and Religious Buildings

The Catholic parish church of St Michael is located at MarktstraĂźe 20. Its construction history dates back to the second half of the 15th century; it was remodelled around 1780. The Catholic Maria Trost Brotherhood Chapel at Mindelheimer StraĂźe 14 dates from 1696. Its nave was added at the end of the 18th century, and the chapel was remodelled in 1911. The Catholic Chapel of St Francis and St George at BrunnenstraĂźe 19 was built around 1700; alterations were made in 1831 and 1936. Comparing the three dates, St Michael has the earliest construction history. At Maria Trost, the original construction, later addition and remodelling can be considered as separate building phases; later alterations are also part of the recorded history of St Francis and St George.

Water Treading in the Warmer Months

The water-treading facility is on Georg-Hörterich-Weg, near the fire station. It is freely accessible and available free of charge during the warmer months; on hot summer days, it offers a refreshing break. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, treat it as a seasonal offering rather than something available year-round. This brings together two distinct highlights of the area’s local history: historic building phases and a practical way to cool off in the warmer season.

The Unterallgäu as a Wider Travel Destination

In the wider travel destination of the Unterallgäu, the Iller to the west and the Wertach to the east form its natural boundaries. The district is located along the A7 and A96 motorways; an extensive road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg also make the region accessible. Cycling and hiking trails throughout the district are signposted consistently, and the Unterallgäu also has its Glückswege trails. For specific travel arrangements and current connections, it is worth checking the relevant timetable information.

The Unterallgäu’s nature attractions also differ in character. The 3.2-kilometre forest discovery trail in Bad Grönenbach introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. The Buxheim forest discovery trail runs for 2.7 kilometres around the Buxheim pond and is designed to make nature an experience for all the senses. The forest discovery trail in the Bannwald forest in Ottobeuren has eleven stations. You can directly compare the distances given for the two trails with specified lengths; for the trail in the Bannwald forest, the number of stations is given instead. The Benninger Ried is easy to walk and has its own educational trail as well as a viewing platform.

Regional cultural interests lead to other destinations with their own distinct appeal: the Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim are among the Unterallgäu’s significant architectural monuments. Kirchheim Castle, owned by the Fugger family, features the world-famous Cedar Hall; the former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. In the monastery’s east wing, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum documents the life and work of the famous priest with more than 2,000 exhibits. At Mindelburg Castle, the courtyard is accessible year-round, while the keep, converted into a viewing tower, is open from April to October. Check the latest visitor information before your visit, as seasonal access may change.

Bad Wörishofen is one of the Unterallgäu’s Kneipp health resorts; Ottobeuren is a Kneipp spa town. Bad Wörishofen also hosts the Culinary Mile twice a year, in spring and autumn, with numerous food-tasting stalls and freshly prepared dishes. The menus may vary. If you plan to include the event in your trip, check the dates for your travel year.
