Stadlern offers a variety of ways to explore the town: the annual Great Feast of Our Lady, the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, and hikes to distinctive landmarks in the surrounding landscape. There is also a bathing pond on the edge of town. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the fixed date of the event, the different trail routes and the nearby places separately. This makes it easier to focus your stay on either a cultural highlight or an excursion into the landscape.

Pilgrimage and local culture

Every year on August 15, around a thousand devotees of Mary gather in Stadlern for the Great Feast of Our Lady. The programme includes a morning service at the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary and the festive service in the late morning on Mount Calvary. The two services are separate events on the same feast day. If you are travelling specifically for the occasion, check the current schedule in advance.

Next to the entrance of the Pilgrimage Church stands the “Christ in the Winepress” column. It is one of the most original monuments in the Schwandorf district and provides a distinct cultural highlight alongside the annual pilgrimage. Its location is specific: the column stands right next to the church entrance. This makes it one of the local features to explore regardless of the date of the festival.

Hiking trails and landscape

The Goldbrunnenweg is an easy, 6.7-kilometre circular trail connecting Stadlern and Waldhäuser. It starts at the “Am Hochfels” hiking car park and follows a well-maintained forest track to Mount Calvary in Stadlern. Its circular route, length and difficulty rating provide a clear basis for choosing this hike. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Grenz-Erlebnisrunde offers a different route: it starts at the Hochfels natural monument, leads to the Böhmerwald Observation Tower and Bügellohe, then passes through the forest by the ruins of Reichenstein Castle before returning to Stadlern. The two hikes therefore differ in the way they are described: the Goldbrunnenweg is defined by its circular route, length and easy rating, while the Grenz-Erlebnisrunde is distinguished by its sequence of waypoints and return to Stadlern.

The Böhmerwald Observation Tower was ceremonially inaugurated on July 1, 1984, with support from the municipality of Stadlern. It is a waypoint on the Grenz-Erlebnisrunde, and its history adds a date to the route. Several hiking trails pass the Hochfels natural monument, including the Grenz-Erlebnisrunde.

Hochfels lies in the Schönseer Land, close to Stadlern. The natural monument covers ten hectares and is among Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes. The landscape is shaped by a striking, prominent rock ridge of cordierite-sillimanite gneiss, as well as boulder fields, individual boulders and heath vegetation. From Hochfels, panoramic views extend across the Schönseer Land to the Czech border. Here, geology, open landscape and views offer a different focus from the religious sites in the town centre.

Free parking is available at the “Am Hochfels” hiking car park. From there, a footpath of about 1.2 kilometres leads to the ruins of Reichenstein Castle. The parking and footpath provide a separate point of reference if the castle ruins are your destination. As parking conditions may change, check them before travelling.

Bathing pond and regional context

The Stadlern bathing pond is a natural swimming pond at the end of town in the direction of Weiding. There is a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court right by the pond. This provides another place with its own focus alongside pilgrimage and hiking: water, a playground and beach volleyball are all available at the same location.

Within the wider travel destination of Schwandorf, the district is a holiday region in Bavaria’s Upper Palatinate Forest. The Upper Palatinate Lake District in Schwandorf district is a region shaped by water and a varied landscape. This describes the broader regional context, while Stadlern’s local highlights centre on the pilgrimage church, trails, Hochfels and the bathing pond.
