The district of Schwandorf is a holiday destination in the Upper Palatinate Forest in Bavaria. The Upper Palatinate Lake District also shapes the character of the area with its water and varied landscapes. When planning an overnight stay, you can first decide whether to focus on paths by the water, observing nature, or cultural attractions. The options differ in both theme and type of visit, ranging from signposted trails to guided tours.

Trails and Landscapes by the Water

The Weiher Cycle Route is around nine kilometres long, signposted in both directions along its entire length, and connects Schwandorf with Lake Murner. Along the way, it passes through the Charlottenhofer Weiher nature reserve. This makes it possible to combine waterside scenery and protected nature on a cycling tour. At Lake Murner, there is another type of route: the Murner See Trail forms a circuit around the lake, while a nature trail along the shore explains the area's landscape and cultural history as well as its plant and animal life. The circular trail and the signposted cycle route thus offer different ways to explore the waterside landscape.

The Wasser-Fisch-Natur Adventure Park is located close to Lake Murner. Its three ponds are used for nature observation and fish farming; the site is open year-round at all times of day and night. The Wald- und Heidelandschaft nature reserve is another of the district's natural features: it provides a refuge for species that cannot survive in more densely vegetated, nutrient-rich habitats. In this way, bodies of water and special habitats are distinct aspects of the landscape.

Nature, Activity and Unique Views

The EIXI Adventure Playground is located at Lake Eixendorf, near Neunburg vorm Wald. Its features include swings, spring riders, a slide, a rocking boat and several climbing elements. This offers a different focus for an outing than a cycling tour or nature trail: here, the emphasis is on specific play and climbing equipment. At inMotion PARK, on the largest lake in Eastern Bavaria, the highlight is a spherical tower around 40 metres high.

Geology, History and Guided Visits

Geology and history can also be explored in different ways. The gneiss at Hochfels in the district of Schwandorf was included in Bavaria's list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes. In Nabburg, the Upper Palatinate Open-Air Museum uses around 50 reconstructed buildings to show how people in the Upper Palatinate lived and worked over the past 300 years. The buildings give the museum a tangible connection to the region's architectural and everyday history.

In the town of Schwandorf, the Felsenkeller Labyrinth comprises more than 130 cellar compartments. A connected section with around 60 rooms has been renovated and is open to the public as part of guided tours. Visits are therefore only possible on a guided tour. The Dieterskirchen Friends of the Stars Observatory offers another way to explore a subject: guided tours are held there regularly. These include a planetarium show and, when the sky is clear, observations through the telescopes.

Accommodation and Practical Planning

When choosing accommodation, it helps to prioritise the activities and their locations: the open-air museum in Nabburg, the Felsenkeller Labyrinth in Schwandorf, the observatory in Dieterskirchen, or the trails around Lake Murner in Wackersdorf. This lets you tailor your search to the visits that matter for your stay, rather than automatically trying to fit every attraction into one day's itinerary.

The BAXI Museum Line 8402 serves the open-air museum in the district of Schwandorf. Check the timetable before you travel. For the Felsenkeller Labyrinth, you can ask the Schwandorf Tourist Office about tour dates and reserve tickets; check which dates are available before your visit. This makes it clear when planning which experiences involve trails, independent nature observation or a guided tour.
