At 612 metres, Jugenberg is considered Nittenau’s local mountain. Its slopes feature forest trails and rock formations; the mountain is a popular destination for hikers. The town’s 2024 hiking and leisure map also shows more than 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails within the municipality. This makes Nittenau a place to choose for a stay where nature trails and town history offer different points of interest.

Hiking routes by distance and difficulty

The routes vary in distance and difficulty. The Jugenberg Circular Route is 12.4 kilometres long, rated moderate, has 404 metres of elevation gain and takes four hours. The Knights and Ghosts Trail is also rated moderate: it covers 12.1 kilometres, has 305 metres of elevation gain and starts at the Stefling car park. The two circular routes are therefore similar in length and have the same difficulty rating; their elevation gain and starting points set them apart. This gives you several specific points of comparison for planning, without treating distance alone as a measure of a route’s character.

A shorter option is the In der Regenaue Circular Route: it is 5.6 kilometres long, starts at Kirchplatz and takes about one hour and 30 minutes. By contrast, Trail 25 A runs for 10.1 kilometres from Nittenau via Sollbach to the Goldsteig. It is rated easy and has 148 metres of elevation gain. It is therefore longer than the In der Regenaue loop, but has a different difficulty rating. When choosing, compare the difficulty rating and elevation gain as well as the distance. An approximate duration is also available for the In der Regenaue Circular Route.

The network also includes the Der Bunte Weg nature trail, which is part of the In der Regenaue themed trail and is close to town.

Town history and culture

The Storchenturm stands in the market square and was probably built in the 14th century. The Nittenau Town Museum displays a copy of the document that records the town’s first mention in 1007. A wooden model reconstructs numerous houses based on the layout shown on an 1832 cadastral map. The tower, the document copy and the model offer different ways to explore the town’s history: from a historic building and its first recorded mention to a reconstructed view of the town.

Nittenau’s historic castles and palaces include Hof am Regen Castle, Stockenfels Castle and Stefling Palace. The “Geisterwanderung” (“Ghost Walk”) festival also combines culture with a route through the landscape: spectators walk through the Regen Valley to three performance locations.

Your travel options therefore include a range of different highlights: longer moderate circular routes, a shorter hike, an easy-rated connecting trail and historic sights. Choose according to whether hiking or town history should shape your stay in Nittenau.
