A stay in Holzheim a.Forst can be planned around two specific themes: the chapel on the Blümelberg and the 11.5 km “Around Holzheim am Forst” circular route. One leads into the town’s architectural history, while the other offers a clearly defined loop with two possible starting points.
St. John of Nepomuk Chapel
The listed Catholic Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands on the Blümelberg in Holzheim a.Forst. Built in 1713, the octagonal central-plan building has plaster detailing, a bell-shaped roof, a roof turret and an onion dome; its furnishings have also been preserved. A central-plan building is arranged around a central point. At the chapel, its basic form, façade detailing and roof features can therefore be considered as distinct elements. This combination of a clearly identified architectural form and specific details makes it a cultural attraction in its own right during a stay.
The circular route and its starting points
The 11.5 km “Around Holzheim am Forst” circular route can be started in Holzheim a. F. or in the district of Bubach a. F. The two starting points give you a specific choice for setting out on the same loop. Check the current condition of the route before setting off.
An art garden nearby
Close to the destination, in the Raffa forest district in the Schwandorf district, is the Kunstwaldgarten art garden. It features sculptures made of metal, stone and wood, created by three artists. The different materials give the garden its own artistic focus alongside the chapel architecture in Holzheim a.Forst.
In the wider Regensburg destination
The Walhalla in Donaustauf is a neoclassical memorial and hall of honour on the Danube. Since 1842, it has honoured notable Germans and people associated with German history with marble busts and memorial plaques. Its exterior is designed in the Doric style and has 52 columns. The site thus combines a clearly defined commemorative purpose with neoclassical architecture.
From Regensburg’s Stone Bridge to the foot of the Walhalla, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé run on the Danube from Easter to October. If you plan this seasonal trip, check operating days in advance. From the bus stop, an approximately 20-minute walk with 358 steps also leads to the Walhalla. Factor the steps into your route planning and check the path conditions before your visit.
Wolfsegg Castle is one of the region’s best-preserved castle complexes. In Wiesent, the nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park offers a different focus: it combines Asian culture and nature with a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian works of art. The grounds also include a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden with more than 6,200 different plant species.
The signposted Fruit Experience Trail is a cycling route of about 34 kilometres from Hemau via Beratzhausen to Kallmünz. Twelve large information boards stand along the route. For a different cultural experience, Bach an der Donau’s Baierwein Museum has a wine trail that is accessible at all times. It provides information about the past and present of Baierwein and introduces White Elbling as a local grape variety.
