Walhalla in Donaustauf combines Neoclassical architecture with a memorial on the Danube. It is one of several very different destinations that shape the Regensburg area: these also include a castle with a museum, an expansive theme park, and trails that explore the landscape and regional history in their own distinctive ways.
Walhalla: Architecture and Commemorative Culture
Walhalla is one of Germany’s significant Neoclassical buildings. Its exterior is characterized by Doric design and includes 52 columns. At the same time, it is a memorial and hall of honor: since 1842, prominent Germans and figures associated with German history have been honored there. Marble busts and commemorative plaques make this memorial function visible. Architecture and commemorative culture are inseparable here.
There are also different ways to plan your journey. From Easter through October, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé travel along the Danube from the Stone Bridge in Regensburg to the foot of Walhalla. Check the specific operating days before your trip. From the bus stop, an approximately 20-minute walk up 358 steps also leads to Walhalla. When planning, you can therefore choose between a boat connection and a route with many steps.
Wolfsegg Castle and Garden Worlds
Wolfsegg Castle is one of the region’s best-preserved castle complexes. Its rooms house a castle museum that was completely redesigned in 2019. The museum aims to bring life in a medieval castle to life in its authentic setting. Its approach connects the castle itself with an impression of what life in such a place was like.
The nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent offers a very different theme. A Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian works of art bring culture and nature together. The park includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. Those with a particular interest in gardens will find a diverse plant world here alongside the cultural references. Separately, the Nepal-Himalaya Pavilion can be reached from Wiesent on a 2.8-kilometer hike.
Trails with Different Points of Interest
The signposted Fruit Experience Trail runs for about 34 kilometers from Hemau via Beratzhausen to KallmĂĽnz. Twelve large information boards stand along the cycling route. The trail thus connects several named places and provides information at designated stops along the way. The Regensburg Castle Trails offer a different kind of route network: since 2007, the KallmĂĽnz Castle ruins have been connected through this network with 44 other castles and castle ruins in the surrounding area. The network includes five hiking routes with a total length of 200 kilometers. These figures highlight the difference between a single cycling route of about 34 kilometers and a network of several hiking routes.
Water Activities and Animal Experiences
At Guggenberger See near Neutraubling, divers, windsurfers and small-boat sailors may enjoy their activities in a designated area. This is a specific option for visitors interested in these water sports; the information applies to the designated area of the lake. At the Regensburg Forest Ropes Course in Riegling near Sinzing, the focus is on 14 courses and 135 climbing elements of varying difficulty. Dream Alpakas offers guided alpaca hikes, also known as alpaca trekking, from its alpaca farm in Altenthann. If you plan to take one of these tours, confirm availability before booking.
Baierwein and White Elbling
In Bach an der Donau, a wine trail is part of the Baierwein Museum. It is accessible at all times, provides information about the past and present of Baierwein, and introduces the local grape variety White Elbling. This regional wine culture offers an additional point of interest alongside the buildings, gardens and activities. The trail provides an independent way to learn about Baierwein without requiring a longer route or a particular means of transport.
