Wildenranna combines the history of a rebuilt village complex with a distinctive church building and trails for hiking and cycling. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether local history and architectural styles or outdoor activities should shape your visit. Local topics range from the village fire of 1898 to a circular hiking trail and a cycle route with a stated distance.

Village History and Parish Church

The historic village centre of Wildenranna is a village complex that was rebuilt after a major fire in 1898. The name refers to the village centre as a whole, not just to a single building. If you are interested in local history, you can consider the rebuilding as a focus in its own right, alongside the village’s buildings and trails.

The Parish Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Wildenranna was built between 1904 and 1906 in Romanesque and Gothic styles. The original finish of the church furnishings was also uncovered inside the church. This brings together different aspects of the history of the building and its furnishings: the architectural styles noted above and the original finish of the furnishings. The village complex and the church thus offer two different ways to explore Wildenranna’s history.

A freestanding war memorial stands on the south side of the parish church. Its construction was completed in 1985, and it was dedicated on 25 May 1986. These dates mark different stages: the completion of construction and the later dedication. Commemorative plaques for participants in the wars of 1870–1871, the First World War and the Second World War are located on the church wall. The local memorials therefore include both the freestanding monument and the plaques on the wall.

Hiking and Cycling

The W8 Sumpfwiesenweg circular hiking trail starts at a free hiking car park in Wildenranna. Along the way, the trail passes a nature reserve for river mussels. As parking regulations can change and access on site may vary, check the conditions before your hike.

The Danube–Moldau Cycle Route runs between Obernzell and Wildenranna for approximately 8 km. About 5.5 km of the route follows the former railway line. The total distance and the section on the former railway line are two different points of reference for the ride. Trail surfaces and signage may change; check them in advance when planning your route.

Different features matter when choosing between the activities: for the W8, the circular route, the starting point in Wildenranna and the nature reserve are all associated with the route. For the cycle route, the distance between Obernzell and Wildenranna and the approximate section on the former railway line are useful details. This lets you choose the type of tour that suits your interests without comparing the different routes by length when their lengths are not directly comparable.
