The museum village: a broad sweep of history

The Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling spans a broad sweep of history: across 20 hectares, you can visit more than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890. It is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. This period covers more than three centuries and brings together different building styles and uses. The museum village includes farmsteads, mills, sawmills and smithies, as well as chapels and field monuments. Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666, provides a clear chronological reference point amid this variety. The contrast between residential and agricultural buildings draws attention to different aspects of rural architecture.

Culture in the museum village and Ortenburg

From April to September, the museum village provides a setting for music and cabaret days featuring Bavarian entertainment. If you are travelling for a particular event, check the exact dates in advance.

Another series of events is the Ortenburg Castle Cultural Programme, organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle. From April to December, it features musical events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, talks and tours. Compared with the music and cabaret days in the museum village, the programme here is broader: alongside performances, it also includes talks and tours. The schedules differ too: the museum village events run from April to September, while the castle programme covers April to December. If a particular event is important to your trip, check the relevant dates.

Rivers, forests and trails in the Passau region

The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal baths. Thermal springs known far and wide are located in Bad FĂĽssing and Bad Griesbach. These springs in two named towns sit alongside the rivers and forests that also help define the region.

The Granit-Erlebnis-Wanderweg (Granite Adventure Hiking Trail) around Hauzenberg and the Schmugglerweg (Smugglers’ Trail) in the Donau-Perlen (Danube Pearls) area are hiking routes in the Passau region. Their names point to different regional associations: granite and Hauzenberg feature in the first, while the Danube Pearls feature in the second. If you choose a hike based on a particular theme or place, these differences can help guide you.

The Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a four-star rating after being assessed by the German Cyclists’ Federation (ADFC). This rating offers a point of reference in addition to the hiking trails’ names. If you use the star rating as a criterion, check the current certification status before setting out.

Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre

The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. Its precise location makes its connection to the Danube especially clear. As a nature experience centre, it offers a different kind of discovery from the historic buildings in Tittling or the events in Ortenburg: here, the narrow valley defines the geographical setting.
