Happurg combines a documentation site with hiking trails through the Franconian Alb landscape and destinations in the surrounding area near the Happurg Reservoir. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether your main focus will be historical remembrance, trails and scenery, or the area around the lake. These different themes can help guide your search for suitable accommodation and your choice of what to experience in Happurg and the wider NĂĽrnberger Land region.

Memorial Site and History in Happurg

The Happurg documentation site is an observation platform with informational displays. The Hersbruck/Happurg documentation site commemorates the former satellite camp of FlossenbĂĽrg concentration camp. One of the two installations is located at the former site of forced labor in Happurg. This information points to different aspects of remembrance: the site in Happurg and the history of the satellite camp.

Another notable site is the unfinished tunnel complex in the Dogger rock of the Houbirg. It is now at serious risk of collapse and is not accessible. Do not plan to enter the tunnel complex, and check the current restrictions before visiting. This makes clear the distinction, when planning, between an accessible documentation site and the closed tunnel complex.

Hiking and the Area Around the Happurg Reservoir

There are designated Nordic walking routes at the Happurg Reservoir. A marked network of hiking trails also runs through the Franconian Alb landscape, including a route to the 612-meter-high Arzberg, which has an observation tower. It lies four kilometers to the west. Check trail markings and route conditions before setting out, as they may change.

The reservoir is not an official bathing lake, and motorboats are not permitted there. After dry spells, it may also not be completely filled and can have a lower water level. These restrictions are useful to keep in mind when planning time by the water: the lake is not designated as an official bathing area, and its water level can vary.

Getting there is also part of planning your visit to the lake: a large parking lot is located just past the substation on state road ST 2236. As parking regulations may change, check the current situation before setting out. The local sailing club’s grounds are on the west bank of the reservoir; this location alone does not indicate whether public visits are possible.

The Happurger Stausee-Express leisure bus route runs from Happurg via Houbirg, Arzlohe, Mittelburg and Waizenfeld to Hartmannshof. The places listed show the route the service follows. If you include it in your plans, check current route conditions and markings before setting out.

More Options in the NĂĽrnberger Land

The wider Nürnberger Land travel region has more than 3,000 kilometers of marked hiking trails and well-developed cycling routes of varying difficulty. The Nürnberger Land is also part of the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. The Franconian Dune Trail offers a different landscape, with sandstone gorges, sand dunes and shady forests.

One specific regional hike is the “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” route in Kirchensittenbach, described as 10.1 kilometers long, with 406 meters of ascent and 397 meters of descent. Another regional route passes through the forests around Pommelsbrunn: the highlight of the “Hochberg (619 m) – SevenSummits” route is the “Acropolis of the Celts” on Hochberg. These tours give you a sense of the range of regional hiking routes without shifting the focus away from planning your trip to Happurg.

The Nürnberger Land also offers culture and relaxation. The German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck displays clothing, equipment and artisan crafts made by shepherds from around the world. The Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck offers relaxation in officially recognized therapeutic water and a sauna area with seven saunas. It is accessible to visitors with disabilities; elevators provide access to the foyer, the thermal baths area, and from there to the sports and leisure pool and the sauna park.
