More than 3,000 kilometers of well-marked hiking trails and well-maintained cycling routes run through Nürnberger Land. The routes vary in difficulty. This makes movement and landscape defining features of the region, while individual routes offer their own discoveries: from a detailed elevation profile to gorge walls, forests and a special viewpoint.

Hiking Trails and Natural Features

The “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” route in Kirchensittenbach is 10.1 kilometers long. The ascent is listed as 406 meters, and the descent as 397 meters. The distance and elevation gain give you concrete points of reference for comparing tours. Check current trail conditions before setting out, too.

Another route named SevenSummits leads through the forests around Pommelsbrunn: “Hochberg (619 m) – SevenSummits.” Its highlight is the “Acropolis of the Celts” on Hochberg. Thus, alongside the figures for the Kirchensittenbach route, this trail puts the forest landscape and a named highlight center stage.

The Bitterbach Gorge in Lauf an der Pegnitz also features a striking landform. Its steep, in places undercut gorge walls, rocks covered with mosses and ferns, deep crevices and holes, and small waterfalls create a varied scene. The Franconian Dune Trail, in turn, passes through sandstone gorges, sand dunes and shady forests. Together, these landscapes range from damp rock walls and waterfalls to sand and forest.

Nürnberger Land is part of the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. Pommelsbrunn is also home to Wengleinpark, a nature reserve founded by Carl Wenglein in 1930. These two connections to nature tell different stories about the region: the nature park places Nürnberger Land within a larger protected landscape, while Wengleinpark is a specific place with its own founding history.

Culture and Getting Your Bearings

At the German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck, you can see clothing, tools and handicrafts made by shepherds from around the world. The collection draws attention to shepherds’ lives and work, adding a cultural perspective to the region’s nature and hiking experiences.

Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck offers relaxation in state-recognized healing water and a sauna area with seven saunas. The spa is accessible: elevators lead to the foyer and spa area, as well as from there to the sports and leisure pool and the sauna park. For getting your bearings, it is important to know not only that the spa is accessible, but also which areas are connected by elevators.

Water and Regional Brewing Culture

The Pegnitz River and the lakes in Nürnberger Land invite visitors to enjoy water sports. This means that alongside hiking and cycling, activities on the water are another regional highlight. You can shape your trip around whichever of these options interests you, without reducing the region’s diverse landscapes and cultural themes to a single type of excursion.

Another regional story leads from hops to beer: local breweries serve beer brewed with hops from Nürnberger Land. These hops are part of the “Hersbrucker Gebirg,” one of the oldest seal districts. So when talking about regional beer, you can name not only the brewery but also the origin of the hops.

Whether you choose a route by distance and elevation gain, discover distinctive landforms, or focus on culture and regional products, Nürnberger Land offers a range of themes to explore. Find a hotel to use as your base that suits your travel plans.
