Roggenburg brings together Baroque monastic culture, a themed circular route by the pond, and several hiking and cycling options. When planning, it helps to distinguish between them by theme and route length: a short circular walk on the Soil Experience Trail sits alongside longer hiking trails in the municipality and a cycling route that passes through Roggenburg.
Abbey Church and Museum
Roggenburg Abbey Church was built between 1752 and 1758. Today, it serves as a parish church and is one of the most significant Rococo buildings in Swabia. Its role as a parish church today is evident alongside its architectural history. The Roggenburg Monastery Museum presents Swabian monastic culture, with Baroque art treasures at the heart of its permanent exhibition. During your stay, you can therefore explore monastic culture through architecture and the museum as distinct experiences.
Guided tours of the Roggenburg Monastery Museum are available by arrangement, and can also include a tour of the church on request. If you are planning a guided tour, arrange the date in advance; you can also request a church tour when making the arrangements.
Events and Garden
The “Roggenburger Sommer” cultural program features church concerts, family concerts and open-air events in the monastery courtyard. Internationally renowned organists regularly play the “Große Roggenburgerin” organ. Individual events and dates may change, so check the program if you are planning your stay around a particular concert.
The Roggenburg Monastery meditation garden features an ivy labyrinth with 300 varieties of ivy, which visitors can explore. It adds a distinctive touch to the monastery grounds alongside the church architecture and art treasures.
Circular Routes, Hiking and Cycling
The Roggenburg Soil Experience Trail is an approximately one-kilometre circular route by Roggenburg Pond. Its eight stations combine information boards and soil profiles with interactive features, including a soil puzzle and a soil treasure chest. The route thus offers a short walk with insights into soil-related topics and hands-on activities.
Boating is possible along the Weiherweg at the monastery pond; operating conditions may vary. The Weiherweg itself is an approximately 6.5-kilometre hiking trail through the municipality of Roggenburg. It starts at car park P 3, south of the education centre. Compared with the approximately one-kilometre Soil Experience Trail, the stated length helps you choose between a short circular walk and a longer hike, without specifying a walking time.
The Orchard Loop also passes orchards in the municipality of Roggenburg. Its stops include Holzschwang, Tiefenbach, Neuhausen, Reutti, Finningen, Gerlenhofen, Senden and Wullenstetten. The route also leads to the fruit variety preservation garden in Biberach, a district of the municipality of Roggenburg. This loop focuses on orchards and preserving fruit varieties, while the Soil Experience Trail centres on soil-related stations.
For cyclists, the four-star “Donautäler” long-distance cycle route passes through Roggenburg on the “Klostergarten-Runde” section. The options described therefore differ not only in theme but also in how you get around: circular walks and hiking trails alongside a signposted cycling route.
More themes in the wider Neu-Ulm destination
The wider Neu-Ulm destination offers further independent cultural and nature experiences. The Edwin Scharff Museum in the centre of Neu-Ulm houses an art museum and a children’s museum under one roof. Visitors of all ages can get involved at the interactive and hands-on stations. The Plessenteich in Neu-Ulm’s Gerlenhofen district offers a different focus: the bird sanctuary has an observation tower with views of birds resting or nesting throughout the year. A total of 200 different bird species have already been spotted there.
