Neu-Ulm brings together different ways to explore: the Edwin Scharff Museum combines an art museum and a children’s museum, Caponniere 4 is part of the Ulm/Neu-Ulm Federal Fortress, and at Plessenteich, the focus is on birds. The range therefore extends from art and history to nature watching and activities for different seasons.

Museums and Fortress History in Neu-Ulm

In the heart of Neu-Ulm, on Petrusplatz, the Edwin Scharff Museum houses an art museum and a children’s museum under one roof. At the children’s museum, hands-on and interactive stations invite visitors of all ages to get involved. So it’s not just about looking: the activities combine a museum visit with trying things out for yourself.

Caponniere 4 offers another way to explore the city’s history. It is part of the Ulm/Neu-Ulm Federal Fortress and is one of the few well-preserved historic monuments in Neu-Ulm. Its connection to the fortress makes it a distinct chapter alongside the city’s art and museum offerings.

The Donaubad also offers different experiences side by side: guests can use the sauna, while an ice sports facility offers winter fun on the ice. If you’re planning a visit, you can think of these as different seasonal highlights.

Cultural Sites and Special Collections

In Roggenburg, the monastery museum presents the history of the Imperial Abbey and its territory from its foundation in 1126 to secularization in 1803. Works of religious art from the 17th and 18th centuries take center stage; topics range from the Baroque period and popular piety to the history of the monastic order. This brings together a broad historical period with a closer look at art and monastic history.

In KellmĂĽnz, the museum tower of the Caelius Mons Archaeological Park documents the history of the Roman province of Raetia and the findings of archaeological excavations. The tower stands on ancient foundations. The park recalls the time when the Raetian Limes along the Iller and Danube formed the western border of the Roman Empire.

The Museum of Fine Arts in the Neu-Ulm district presents contemporary art from the region. The Garden Culture Museum on Jungviehweide offers a different thematic experience: it brings together an exhibition, library, fragrance workshop, garden grounds, and indoor and outdoor activity spaces. The grounds feature more than twenty themed gardens, including the Insect Garden, expanded in 2025, and the “Medicinal Plants of the World” garden.

The Bavarian Bee Museum focuses on a seasonal nature experience. From Easter to October, you can watch a queen bee and her court in a glass observation hive and learn about the lives of bees.

Birdwatching and Trails in the District

The Neu-Ulm district is characterized by green river and lake landscapes. The Plessenteich bird sanctuary is located in Gerlenhofen, a district of Neu-Ulm, where 200 different bird species have already been sighted. An observation tower offers views of resting or nesting birds in every season. Birdwatching is therefore not limited to a single season.

A longer nature trail near Obenhausen follows a river for around five kilometers through the largest lowland bog area in the Neu-Ulm district. The trails in the district are fully signposted in both directions. In Markt Buch, the Rechberg Route is designated as a signposted hiking trail.

Other routes also offer different highlights: the Upper Swabian Baroque Route passes through the Neu-Ulm district. The pilgrimage cycling route passes through Oberelchingen by the monastery complex, where cycling pilgrims are invited to stop. In Roggenburg, the Bavarian-Swabia Listening Tour starts at the Education Center for Family, Environment and Culture. A free app is used for the tour under the keyword “Bayerisch-Schwaben”; check that it is available before your trip.
