Fischhausen on Lake Schliersee: Church, Lakeshore and Trails
On the southern shore of Lake Schliersee, traditional fishermen’s and boathouses line the lakeside in Fischhausen. The Catholic branch and pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard, the Leonhardi Ride and trails to the Hohenwaldeck castle ruins make local history and hiking tangible themes in the village. The church has an elongated octagonal shape with rounded corners and is designed in the so-called Miesbach-Schliersee style. Inside, you’ll find ornaments created by local artists. St. Leonhard can thus be discovered through its distinctive shape and regional design.
Getting Here and Cultural Highlights
The BRB RB 55 line runs along the Munich–Bayrischzell route via Schliersee and Fischhausen-Neuhaus to Fischbachau. The Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum is close to Fischhausen-Neuhaus station and can be reached by BRB trains running hourly. Check current departure times and rail service before travelling.
The traditional Leonhardi Ride from Schliersee to Fischhausen has been held since the 17th century. It takes place every year on the first Sunday in November and ends at St. Leonhard Church with the blessing of horses and riders. At Leonhardi Church, the procession circles around it three times, blessing the horses and pilgrims. A church service is then celebrated together outdoors. Its fixed date and historical significance give the procession a special place in Fischhausen’s annual calendar.
Hiking Trails to the Castle Ruins and Along the Lake
Hiking trail W6, “Oberleiten – Hohenwaldeck Ruins – Fischhausen,” leads to the Hohenwaldeck castle ruins and then towards Fischhausen. From a viewpoint, you can enjoy views of Lake Schliersee and the Alpine foothills. The trail remains accessible, but the ruins themselves are currently closed. The history and nature trail to the castle ruins starts in Schliersee-Fischhausen. It is 4.0 km long, rated moderate and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
The circular route around Lake Schliersee is another way to get active in the wider Schliersee destination. It is about 7 km long, mostly flat and in very good trail condition. Along the route are benches, lakeside viewpoints and swimming coves; a tree discovery trail is also part of the lakeside circuit. The Vitalwelt in Schliersee is a possible starting point, and the adjacent spa park lets you choose which direction to walk.
More Cultural Highlights in Schliersee
The Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum is located in the wider Schliersee destination. Designed as a traditional Old Bavarian farm village, it features carefully reconstructed historic buildings. The Schliersee Local History Museum has been housed in the Schredl House since 1916; the building was constructed in the 14th century. St. Sixtus Church in Schliersee was built between 1712 and 1715 on the site of a medieval predecessor church. Johann Baptist Zimmermann created the ceiling frescoes and stucco work there; the church also houses a Throne of Grace by Erasmus Grasser, dating from 1490.
