Schliersee can be explored through two distinct highlights: the path along the water and the town’s cultural history. If you would like to experience both, you can plan historic buildings, churches and hikes as separate parts of your stay. It is worth distinguishing between flexible activities and offerings with fixed dates or seasonal operating schedules.
Historic Buildings and Church Art
The Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum is designed as a traditional Bavarian farm village, with historic buildings faithfully reconstructed. Traditional crafts such as shoemaking and blacksmithing are demonstrated there, along with brewing beer according to historical methods. The specific demonstrations on offer may vary by date.
The Schliersee Local History Museum has been housed in the Schredl House since 1916; the building was constructed in the 14th century. St. Sixtus Church also brings together several periods: it was built between 1712 and 1715 on the site of an earlier medieval church. Johann Baptist Zimmermann created its ceiling frescoes and stucco work; the church also houses a Throne of Mercy by Erasmus Grasser, dating from 1490.
The cultural stops each offer a different focus: the open-air museum showcases crafts and a reconstructed farm village, while the Schredl House and St. Sixtus bring architectural and art history to life. The dates place the Schredl House, the church building and the artwork in their respective historical periods.
Out and About on Lake Schliersee
The loop around Lake Schliersee is about 7 kilometers long and mostly flat. It is mostly paved and easy to travel; because of a few short climbs, a companion is recommended. Along the route are benches for resting, lakeside viewpoints and swimming coves. The official lakeside loop also includes a tree trail. This allows you to divide the route and breaks according to your interests, as not every section has the same focus.
The Vitalwelt can serve as a possible starting point; the adjacent Kurpark allows you to choose your direction of travel. When planning the loop, you can first decide which direction you would like to take and use the roughly 7-kilometer distance as a guide for planning your day. Trail conditions and facilities may change through maintenance.
Other Trails and Seasonal Activities
The Josefsthal Waterfalls are located near the destination, on the southern side of Lake Schliersee in the Neuhaus district. The hike there is considered moderately difficult, is about 2.8 kilometers long and takes around 1.5 hours. This is a separate hiking option alongside the lakeside loop; the distance and duration help you plan the time needed for each separately.
The Schliersee Church Trio is a two-hour hike from church to church, linking Christuskirche, St. Sixtus and St. Georg. Dates run from February 19, 2026, to February 11, 2027. Check the current schedule before your trip if you would like to include this hike.
The Schliersee III motor vessel operates on Lake Schliersee from May to September. As seasonal operating details may change, check with the provider in advance to see whether trips are currently being offered. A local article dated August 27, 2026, lists rowboats, pedal boats, electric boats and slide boats at Lauber Boat Rental, next to the Vitalwelt. Operations are weather-dependent; check the current offerings before using the boats.
A recurring annual event is the year-end gathering at the Local History Museum: the Schliersee Local History Society invites visitors every year on December 31. If you plan your trip around this event or a seasonal boat service, confirm the current schedule in advance. That way, you can plan your travel days around fixed dates rather than treating time-dependent activities as available at any time.

If you are also planning a hike with fixed dates or seasonal operating hours, check its current schedule before setting your travel dates.
