On the northern shore of Lake Ammersee, cycling routes, moorland and historic buildings come together in Eching. The town is well suited as a destination and starting point for hikes on foot or by bicycle around the lake and into the surrounding area. For your stay, you can therefore choose between different focuses: paths by the lake, natural areas or local architectural history.

Moorland and Recreation Area

The Ampermoos, which is under nature protection, stretches from the northern shore of Lake Ammersee to Grafrath and characterizes the landscape around Eching on Lake Ammersee. It was formed after the last Ice Age as a shallow lake moor and is now one of the largest preserved river valley lowland moor complexes in southern Bavaria. The Ampermoos is also an important habitat for meadow-nesting birds such as the snipe and the Eurasian curlew. Anyone interested in the unique character of the landscape will find information here about its formation history as well as its importance as a habitat.

The wooded recreation area Weingarten borders Eching on Lake Ammersee to the south. It includes a lido and sunbathing lawns; there is also a sailing club and play areas for children. These various facilities make Weingarten another highlight for your stay. Before a visit, check the current operating information for the facilities.

Cycling routes, hikes and paths to the lake

In Eching on Lake Ammersee, the Ammer-Amper long-distance cycling route and the Ammersee cycling route from Munich to Bad Wörishofen meet. The Three Lakes Tour starts at the car park of the Eching on Lake Ammersee recreation area. For orientation, these are different connection points: the two named cycling routes cross in the town, while the car park serves as the starting point for the Three Lakes Tour.

Lake Ammersee itself also offers a wide range of water sports in summer. From Easter until the end of October, ships operated by the Bavarian Lake Shipping Company dock in the neighboring village of Stegen. Stegen can be reached from Eching on foot or by bicycle. As the boat service operates seasonally, check the current operating information for your trip.

Chapels and churches in Eching

The St. Sebastian Plague Chapel stands at the entrance to Eching by the Windach Bridge and was built in 1651. Its stucco work was created by Franz Xaver Schmuzer from the Wessobrunn School of Stucco Workers. Another insight into the architectural history is provided by the parish church of St. Peter and Paul: it was expanded in the 18th century and has a high altar from the Rococo period. Together, the chapel and parish church offer two different stops for anyone who wants to get to know the town’s sacred architecture as well as its landscape and opportunities for activity.

Getting there and orientation

From Landsberg am Lech, Eching on Lake Ammersee can be reached via the A96 and exit 29 Greifenberg. From Munich, the A96 leads to exit 30 Inning am Ammersee. Trains on the MVV S4 line stop in the neighboring villages of TĂĽrkenfeld, about 5 km away, and Grafrath, about 7 km away. The distances are approximate; you should check the timetables separately.

There are two large car parks in the recreation area in the southern part of the municipality. When choosing your accommodation, you can first consider which focus is most important for your stay: the cycling routes, the Ampermoos, the facilities by the lake or the historic buildings. Then coordinate your journey by car, the S4 stops in the neighboring villages or the seasonal boat service with your own plans.
