Discover Schondorf am Ammersee through different periods: St. Jakob’s Church in Unterschondorf was built around 1149, while the Gestalt Archive and Studio Rose offer insights into 20th-century art and artists. There is also a 12 km Way of St. James hiking trail. When looking for accommodation, consider which of these interests matters most to you.

Church, archive and artistic heritage

St. Jakob’s Church in Unterschondorf has largely retained its original form to this day. Its medieval history is quite distinct from Schondorf’s art venues, whose themes range from the 20th century to contemporary exhibitions.

The Gestalt-Archiv Hans Herrmann e.V. presents changing exhibitions in its archive building on art education, creative work and textile work in the 20th century. It was founded by art educator Hans Herrmann (1899–1981). The breadth of its subject matter makes the archive a destination in its own right for anyone interested in art education and textile work as well as visual design.

Since 1987, Studio Rose has provided contemporary artists with opportunities to exhibit their work. At the same time, it commemorates the artistic work of the painter brothers Walter (1903–1964) and Heinz Rose (1902–1971), who lived in Schondorf. In 2017, Renate Rose bequeathed studioRose, designed as an exhibition space, to the municipality of Schondorf, along with numerous works by her husband, Heinz Rose. This history connects the idea behind the exhibition space with the work of one of the two brothers.

These venues offer different cultural perspectives: the church represents medieval architectural history; the archive features changing themes in art education and textile work; and Studio Rose offers contemporary exhibition opportunities and showcases the brothers’ artistic legacy. If you include art venues in your travel plans, you can decide which of these perspectives interests you most.

The Way of St. James and bathing cabins

The 12 km Way of St. James hiking trail starts in Schondorf at the boat landing, where there is parking, near St. Jakobus Chapel. Following the shell markers, it leads through the forest to the Echinger lido. Its starting point, trail markers and destination make the route easy to follow. At 12 km, it is a substantial outing in its own right, rather than a brief visit to an individual cultural site; if you plan to do both, factor in the length of the hiking day.

Another local detail can be found at the beach area of Café Forster in Schondorf: original bathing cabins from the 1930s are still there. They add an example of 20th-century bathing culture to the historical connections offered by the church and art venues. Check current visitor arrangements before visiting the beach area.

Another perspective: Landsberg am Lech

Landsberg am Lech offers a distinct focus on urban history and architecture. The Bayertor dates from 1425 and is considered one of Bavaria’s finest Gothic buildings. The Mutterturm is a Historicist monument that Herkomer had built in honour of his mother. The Landsberg am Lech City Museum presents the city’s history and connects it with questions of the present. It also offers one of the finest views of the city from Leitenberg. These themes differ from Schondorf’s focus on its church, art and the Way of St. James.

The landscape offers a different experience in Landsberg am Lech, too: Lechpark Pössinger Au is the city’s main local recreation area and includes woodland, meadows and floodplain landscape, with animal and plant species that have become rare. Guided tours of Landsberg’s Old Town tell stories from its past, including dukes and electors, the salt trade, raftsmen, dyers and tanners, as well as Jesuits and Ursulines. Landsberg thus focuses on urban history and the Lech, while Schondorf offers its own points of interest in church history, art and hiking.
