In Willanzheim, the history of fortified churches meets paths through vineyards and orchard landscapes. When planning your visit, it is worth choosing a theme: the Village Culture Trail leads through the town, the HĂĽttenheim trails explore the landscape around Tannenberg, and the Orchard Adventure Trail is in Markt Herrnsheim. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without combining the different trails into a single route.

Village Culture Trail and Hikes on Tannenberg

The Willanzheim Village Culture Trail is a five-kilometre circular route with eight information boards. The boards give the trail its focus on cultural history; guided tours are also available for groups and school classes. If you are planning a group visit, you can consider this guided format as a separate option.

Hiking trails H1 and H2 lead around Hüttenheim’s Tannenberg through the vineyard landscape. H1, “Historic Paths around Tannenberg,” bears the “Wege zum Wein” (Paths to Wine) quality seal and starts at the Hüttenheim hiking car park. Information boards along the trail explain details of the cultural landscape. H2 is four kilometres long. If you are looking for a shorter route, you can compare H2 with H1 without assuming a walking time.

The HĂĽttenheim hiking trails pass just a few metres from the Kneipp pool at the Neuwiesenbach spring. The pool lies southeast of HĂĽttenheim at the foot of Tannenberg and invites you to cool off. Check local conditions before your visit.

Fortified Churches and Church History

The fortified church complex defines the centre of Willanzheim. St. Martin’s Church became the seat of an original parish and is the mother church of Tiefenstockheim and Obernbreit. These connections represent different aspects of church history: the church’s early role as a parish and its historical relationship with the other two places. Church guides are available in the church entrance area.

Nearby, in Hüttenheim, the fortified church complex is one of the best-preserved fortified church complexes with gaden in Franconia. It adds another location to the fortified church theme. The “Fortified Churches Tour” themed cycling route passes through Willanzheim, Markt Herrnsheim and Hüttenheim, so you can also identify the route by its three named places.

Orchard Meadows and Wine in the Districts

Markt Herrnsheim, a district of Willanzheim, offers a different focus. The Orchard Adventure Trail passes through the orchard meadows around the village, is about two kilometres long and is easy to walk. It brings the subject of orchard meadows to life for children, school classes, families and anyone interested. Its orchard theme is clearly distinct from the vineyard paths around Tannenberg.

In HĂĽttenheim, winemakers offer wine tastings and vineyard tours. This adds a dedicated wine theme to the hiking and cycling tours. When deciding what to do, you can therefore choose whether to focus on a route through the vineyard landscape, a trail with information boards, an introduction to orchard meadows, or an offering from the winemakers.

Another Look at History in Kitzingen

The wider travel destination of Kitzingen has other historical sights that offer a different focus from Willanzheim’s fortified churches and cultural landscape. The Falterturm was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall and was formerly called “Falltorturm.” The Old Main Bridge in Kitzingen, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. Both structures are examples of Kitzingen’s own urban history.
