The Falter Tower, Market Tower and Old Main Bridge represent different aspects of Kitzingen’s history. Museums, guided tours and activities on the Main also offer ways to make your stay cultural or active.
Towers, bridge and town hall
The Falter Tower, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built from 1469 to 1496 as a watchtower on the outer city wall. The 39-metre-high Market Tower originally belonged to the inner city wall and served as a watchtower and prison. The two towers therefore represent different parts of the town’s former fortifications.
The Old Main Bridge, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. The town hall, an important historic building dating from the 16th century, is located on the Market Square. Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen built it in the Renaissance style. A public walking tour takes you through the historic centre and across the Market Square, sharing the town’s history; check the dates before your trip. The town tour visits Kitzingen’s key sights, squares and distinctive corners.
Museums and special guided tours
At the German Carnival Museum, visitors explore Fasching, Fastnacht and Carnival. Numerous interactive stations and spacious exhibition rooms offer a playful introduction to these traditions. The Deusterturm houses an ornithological exhibition with a different focus.
The Kitzingen Tasting Tour combines samples from local restaurants with an exclusive torch-lit tour of the Deuster cellars. If you would like to include this activity in your trip, check the dates in advance.
On the Main and out and about
The Main near Kitzingen is signposted for canoeists with the “Yellow Wave” and invites you to explore the river by boat. Canoes, Canadian canoes and kayaks are available to rent in Kitzingen; check the rental companies’ current offerings before your trip. Another option for active days is the “From the Main to the Zenn” long-distance cycle route: it is almost 100 kilometres long and heads towards Neustadt an der Aisch, Langenzenn and Veitsbronn. The Bleichwasen in Kitzingen is one of the route’s starting or ending points.
For family outings, Kitzingen’s outdoor swimming pool on Mondsee Island is open from May to September. Facilities include a 50-metre swimming pool, an 80-metre water slide and a diving tower. The seasonal opening period is an important factor when planning a day of swimming.
The Kitzingen region
Beyond Kitzingen, the Kitzingen region is shaped by the foothills of the Steigerwald, the Main’s meanders and vineyards. Viticulture, a long tradition of horticulture and a mild climate are among the region’s defining features; the area is also known as a “wine district.”
For excursions across this wider travel region, the 15 TraumRunden offer a selection of routes along natural paths and roads with little asphalt. They lead to viewpoints and past cultural and scenic treasures. Wine is also part of the region’s offerings, including wineries, wine bars, hedge taverns and wine experiences. Guided tours in the Kitzingen region also include vineyard tours with wine tastings.
