If you want to combine local history, wine and culture in Volkach, there are several specific themes to explore: in the historic town centre, Franconian gastronomy, numerous wine shops and wine bars sit alongside buildings with a long history. There is also a permanent exhibition on the Mainschleife and the town’s cultural past, as well as experiences that go beyond a walk through the old town. The suggestions below will help you choose what to focus on during your stay.

Discover the town’s history through its buildings

The Upper Gate, also known as Diebenturm, was built in the 13th century. Its former prison cells have been preserved inside. They offer a glimpse of the gate’s former use. A different timescale is reflected in the Catholic Church of St Bartholomew: the foundation stone for the present-day church was laid in 1413, and construction continued until the 18th century. The church tower is 54 metres high. In Volkach, medieval building history thus stands alongside a church whose construction spanned several centuries.

The Barockscheune Museum was opened by the town in 2003. It is housed in a renovated barn dating from 1714, with exposed shell-limestone masonry and an unusual mansard hip roof. The permanent exhibition explores the history, landscape and culture of the Mainschleife, as well as the town’s cultural past. The museum thus complements the view of individual historic buildings with a thematic perspective on the town and its landscape.

Guided tours and special experiences

Since 2006, the Volkach town scribe has been guiding children through the exhibition at the Barockscheune Museum. At six interactive stations, young visitors can solve a secret code and open a safe. This offers a different focus from simply looking at the exhibits: a specific puzzle is part of the tour.

The Maria im Weingarten pilgrimage church is located in the area around Volkach. On a guided tour, visitors learn about faith, customs and Tilman Riemenschneider’s famous Madonna in the Rosary. If you would like to include this visit in your plans, check the dates and availability of the tour before travelling.

Wine, the market square and getting your bearings

The Volkach Ticket lets you visit participating wine shops and taste a Silvaner or another wine from their selection. You can get it from the Tourist Information Office for the Volkach Mainschleife, in Volkach Town Hall. Participating wine shops may also be outside Volkach, so check which establishments are taking part and the current ticket details before buying.

The market square hosts a variety of events, including concerts, wine tastings and markets. Check the specific event dates before your trip. On the MainRadweg cycle route, Volkach is at kilometre 29.2; the path to the historic market square branches off just before the Main bridge. This makes it easy to link a visit to the square to a specific landmark on the cycling route.

The Forest & Village Loop offers a focus on nature. It passes two lakes with rich flora and fauna, where common toads find an ideal habitat. Alongside the historic buildings, exhibition and wine offerings, this gives you a choice of different themes to focus on during your stay.
