Iphofen combines a historic town center with a distinctive wine-growing landscape. Its completely preserved fortifications, winding lanes, town houses dating back centuries and magnificent churches bring the town’s history to life. Museums and trails also offer different ways to explore its culture and winegrowing heritage. When planning your stay, it helps to decide what you would like to focus on: the town walls and collections, the vineyards, or a combination of both.
Fortifications, churches and Iphofen’s history
The historic fortifications include town walls, towers and gates. A well-known example is the Rödelseer Gate. Together with the winding lanes and town houses dating back centuries, the fortifications shape the character of the town center. St. Vitus Parish Church adds a work of art to this picture: it houses a figure of John the Evangelist by Riemenschneider.
Those wishing to learn more about the town’s history can visit the exhibition Iphöfer Geschichte(n) in the History Barn behind the town hall. It features a talking town model, zoom-in displays and a lapidarium with stone sculptures from Iphofen. The exhibition thus combines an overview of the town with insights into individual stone artifacts. The Knauf Museum Iphofen offers a different perspective: it presents more than 200 replicas of important museum objects from around the world and hosts exclusive special exhibitions every year alongside its permanent exhibition.
The history of the buildings is also part of Iphofen’s cultural offering. In the 1960s, gypsum manufacturer and arts patron Dr. Alfons N. Knauf began converting a magnificent Iphofen Baroque building dating from 1688 into a private museum. This date marks the start of the conversion and the age of the building; it is a historical reference in its own right, alongside the exhibitions and collections.
Wine country: trails, views and grape varieties
Several topics can be explored and compared around Iphofen’s vineyards. Marked with i 2, the Kronsbergweg circular hiking trail runs for about 7 kilometers through the Kronsberg vineyard. Along the same vineyard, the grape-variety educational trail explains important traditional Franconian grape varieties. Those more interested in the history of winegrowing can visit the Iphofen Historical Vineyard, which presents key periods from the late Middle Ages through the 1960s. From the terroir f viewpoint in the Julius-Echter-Berg vineyard, the view stretches across Iphofen and its vineyards.
The stops described above each offer a different focus: the Kronsbergweg combines the vineyard with a circular hike, the educational trail draws attention to grape varieties, and the Historical Vineyard explores the development of Franconian winegrowing. For a more direct comparison of trail lengths, there is also the N1 circular hiking trail: about 13 kilometers long, it leads around Iphofen’s Nenzenheim district to natural sites. The starting point and finish are at the Nenzenheim sports field. Views can be enjoyed at Wolfsee, from the Andreas-Därr Tower and at “Am Stöckig.” Its approximate length sets it apart from the Kronsbergweg; check current trail conditions locally.
