Großlangheim combines a history of winegrowing with culture, trails and seasonal nature. The Wine Experience Trail leads from the town centre to the Hardthütte and combines information about wine and grape varieties with views over the Main Valley. Other highlights include St. Anthony’s Chapel with its frescoes, the Krackenweg and nature attractions that vary with the seasons.
Winegrowing, Views and Guided Tours
Großlangheim is one of the oldest winegrowing communities in the surrounding area. At terroir f by the Hardthütte, an observation platform shaped like a reclining Bocksbeutel—a symbol and trademark of Franconian wine—rises above the Kiliansberg vineyard. The Wine Experience Trail starts at the Winzerbrünnle in the town centre and leads to the Hardthütte, with information boards about wine, grape varieties and winegrowing along the way. From there, panoramic views stretch from the Schwanberg across the Main Valley.
On request, the tour guides in Großlangheim can arrange a wine tasting to accompany a guided tour. The Marterlesweg is also one of the guided tour topics on offer and leads to stone monuments reflecting popular piety. Ask the tour guides about the current availability of guided tours and wine tastings.
St. Anthony’s Chapel and Local History
The frescoes in St. Anthony’s Chapel date from the 14th and 15th centuries. A cycle of 16 paintings depicts scenes from the life of St. Anthony. After seven years of restoration, the chapel reopened in 1977. If you would like to visit, contact the Großlangheim municipal authority in advance.
The town’s history also includes the period when Großlangheim was the principal town of the county. It also appears that the town served as a residence for the counts at times.
The Krackenweg and Nature Through the Seasons
The public Krackenweg trail loops around Großlangheim, is about five kilometres long and can be walked in stages. Its 15 stops feature play equipment and places to rest, including a water play area, a barefoot path and fitness equipment for adults. Before setting out, check local information for possible temporary changes.
The early-flowering woodland is a great place for a walk in early spring, when snowflakes bloom among the old oak trees. The flowering period varies from year to year. Orchids and many other increasingly rare plant species can be found year-round in the “Kranzer” wetland.
Kitzingen: Towers, Bridge and City History
The wider destination of Kitzingen has its own historical context. The Falterturm in Kitzingen, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower in the outer city wall. The Old Main Bridge in Kitzingen, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. Kitzingen’s town hall on the market square is a significant historic building dating from the 16th century, built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style.
The public city tour of Kitzingen listed for 2026 takes visitors through the historic centre and across the market square, sharing the city’s history. Check the dates before your trip.
