Dettelbach’s town walls, church art and pilgrimage history give the town a distinctly historical character. Museums and themed trails complement this with viticulture, Main geology and Franconian literature. The parish church, market square and town hall are in the historic centre. When planning your visit, you can choose between architecture and art, pilgrimage themes and a variety of walking routes.

Town Walls and Historic Centre

In 2024, the town stated that its late-medieval town walls are just over 1,400 metres long. Of the approximately 52 towers that once stood there, 38 were still visible at the time; others could only be made out. With its two unequal towers, St Augustine’s Parish Church is a landmark of Dettelbach. Among its special attractions are the Gothic interior and the altarpiece by artist Michael Triegel, which forms the spiritual centre.

The Late Gothic town hall, with its double-flight outdoor staircase, is considered one of the most beautiful and is the oldest in the district of Kitzingen. Right next to the historic town hall, the KUK Dettelbach houses the “Pilgrims & Pilgrimage” art museum. It features original works of art and objects and focuses on the most significant Marian pilgrimage in the Diocese of Würzburg, which is still very much alive. This pilgrimage has shaped life in Dettelbach for more than 500 years.

Churches and Pilgrimage

The “Maria in arena” pilgrimage church is also part of this historical story. It was built in 1573 and consecrated on 8 September 1613. Its origins are connected with the revival of the Dettelbach pilgrimage during the Renaissance. The two dates mark different stages in its history: the year of construction and its later consecration. Together with the parish church and museum, the pilgrimage offers a distinct cultural focus for the town.

Trails Through Vineyards, Literature and Landscape

The Legends and Myths Trail runs for around two kilometres through the vineyards and Dettelbach countryside. Twelve information boards present myths about Dettelbach as well as facts about the geology of the Main, the development of agriculture and the region’s winegrowing. Those interested in literary themes will find 15 stops with Franconian poems along the Joseph Kram Poets’ Trail. They explore the living conditions, ways of thinking and feelings of the rural population in the 19th century. The poets’ trail complements the “Pilgervolk” and “Panta Rhei” cultural and art trails.

For a longer hike, there is the 11-kilometre “TraumRunde” Dettelbach circular trail. The Herz-Jesu-Höhe is one of its highlights. The trails therefore differ not only in theme but also in their stated lengths: around two kilometres for the Legends and Myths Trail compared with eleven kilometres for the circular hike. Cycling tours on the Main Cycle Route are also possible from Dettelbach. These walking and cycling routes offer their own ways to explore the region’s winegrowing and landscape themes.

A Local Speciality

Muskatzinen are a spiced baked treat found only in Dettelbach. They were created especially for pilgrims and are often served with wine. The connection with pilgrimage is reflected not only in the churches and museum, but also in a local speciality. Those interested in the history of pilgrimage will therefore encounter the theme in Dettelbach both in its cultural offerings and in its local food culture.

Getting There by Train

Dettelbach-Bahnhof station is about five kilometres from Dettelbach-Stadt. There is plenty of free parking for cars at the station; bus access is limited. Trains to Würzburg or Nuremberg run hourly. Factor in the distance between the station and the town when planning your journey, and check the train timetable and bus connections before you travel.
