Castle ruins, the Witches’ Tower, half-timbered houses and the Main Cycle Route give visitors to Zeil a.Main a range of reasons to stay. Local attractions take you from the history of the town walls to an exhibition about the witch trials. If you’re planning to explore beyond the town, the wider Haßberge destination offers further hiking and cultural landscapes.
Castle Ruins and the Witches’ Tower
Schmachtenberg Castle Ruins rise prominently above the Main Valley. Hikers can reach them via the Eselsteig trail from Ziegelanger or the Schmachtenberger Steige trail. These are two named routes to the ruins that form part of the local hiking destinations.
The exhibition in Zeil’s Witches’ Tower focuses on the history of the witch trials in the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg and in Zeil a.Main. Historical documents, trial records and eyewitness accounts offer insight into events in the 17th century. Check seasonal opening information before your visit.
Old Town: Town Walls, TorstraĂźe and Half-Timbered Houses
The town describes its market square as one of the most beautiful small-town market squares in Franconia. The view of the town walls shows the southern section of the 14th-century walls. The two offer different perspectives on Zeil’s architectural history: one of the central square, the other of a particular section of the fortifications.
Obere Torstraße is a historic street that ends at the imposing town tower. Opposite stands the former hunting lodge of Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, built in 1695; it now houses the tax office. The street brings historic architecture together with a present-day administrative use. Speiersgasse, with Freyung, adds a half-timbered ensemble to the townscape.
Festival, Pilgrimage Site and Cycle Route
The Old Town Wine Festival takes place every year on the first weekend in August in the historic old town. Music, lights and wine are the hallmarks of the festival. Exact dates and the programme vary from year to year; check them before planning your trip if you’d like to time your stay to coincide with the festival.
Another cultural landmark is the Zeiler Käppele, a famous pilgrimage site on a hilltop. Zeil a.Main is also located directly on the Main Cycle Route, making it a practical point of reference for travellers choosing a destination along this cycling route.
In the wider HaĂźberge destination
Beyond Zeil a.Main, the wider HaĂźberge destination encompasses a gently rolling low mountain range. HaĂźberge Nature Park is characterised by extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and a varied landscape. It offers a distinct regional setting for nature and hiking enthusiasts.
The Haßberge Nature Park experience trails are half-day or full-day routes that loop back to their starting points. The 190-kilometre Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail through the German Castle District covers a much greater distance. By comparison, the “Hutzeldorf” European Cultural Trail in Fatschenbrunn is a circular route of around 6 kilometres. Information boards and leaflets explore the village and its cultural landscape.
A regional speciality is also part of this wider destination: Fatschenbrunn is known for making “Hutzeln”. Pears are dried into dried fruit using a traditional method.
