Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low mountain region with extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and a varied landscape. Those who want to experience nature on foot can hike the “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail” in the German Castle Corner. The Haßberge Nature Park’s excursions are half-day or full-day tours and follow circular routes back to the starting point. To plan your day, you can first consider which time format fits your stay.
Hiking trails by distance and route
For the longer trails, distance and route offer a different point of reference. The Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail is a 190-kilometre long-distance trail through the German Castle Corner. The Celtic Adventure Trail runs for 254 scenic kilometres from the Werra via the Gleichberge and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. This makes the Celtic Adventure Trail 64 kilometres longer than the Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail. The Amtsbotenweg crosses the Haßberge ridge, from Altenstein to Königsberg. Its two endpoints give you a clear reference for the route.
Castles, ramparts and views
Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge. Another testament to the past is Schwedenschanze, a ring-wall complex dating from the Hallstatt period. The Schwedenschanze observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high hilltop on the Haßberge ridge. From there, the expansive view stretches over mixed forest to the Grabfeld, as well as to the distant heights of the Rhön to the northwest and Thuringia to the north. Archaeological history and a far-reaching view across the landscape come together here at a named location.
Eltmann Castle is the ruin of a spur castle and offers a viewpoint from the former keep. The Altenstein Castle Information Centre is the heart of the German Castle Corner and points visitors to castles, castle ruins and palaces in the Haßberge. Its exhibits include an armoury with medieval knight’s armour and weapons, as well as a fictional excavation site with an adjoining research laboratory. Alongside the historic structures, visitors can explore the world of castles in a variety of ways.
Local railway history and regional traditions
At Hofheim railway station, the railway museum presents the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. Registration is required to visit the interior; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05. If you are planning a visit to the museum, arrange your appointment in advance.
Regional everyday culture is also worth discovering: Fatschenbrunn is known for making “Hutzeln”. In this traditional process, pears are dried to make dried fruit. The “Hutzeldorf” European Cultural Trail in Fatschenbrunn is a circular route of around six kilometres. Information boards and leaflets provide information about the village and its cultural landscape. The route thus combines a clearly defined itinerary with information about the place it passes through.
A hike through the Abt-Degen wine valley can be combined with Franconian wine at numerous hedge taverns and wine bars. Check the visiting options at each establishment in advance, as the participating venues may change.
