In the Haßberge holiday region, the Castle Road runs from Bamberg through Rentweinsdorf, Ebern, Pfarrweisach and Maroldsweisach, continuing to Seßlach in the Coburg region. In Maroldsweisach, this route meets distinctive castle architecture and a characteristic townscape. The Stone Adventure Trail on the Zeilberg adds a nature experience to the cultural impressions; further hiking and cultural themes can be found in the wider Haßberge travel destination.

Castle Views and Townscape in Maroldsweisach

Maroldsweisach Castle can be viewed from the outside at any time. Check locally before your visit to see whether there are any restrictions. Together with the parish church and the estate, the castle shapes the townscape. These three buildings give the town centre a distinct architectural profile and offer different vantage points on a walk through the town.

Ditterswind Castle is a large complex that largely appears to be a work of the Historicist style. The old building was extended upwards, and a western extension was added, featuring slender corner turrets topped with battlements. On the street-facing side, a projecting round tower with an onion dome separates the old and new buildings. The coat of arms of the Stein von Altenstein family on the old building marks the completion of its construction in 1743. Ditterswind Castle can only be viewed from the outside: here, the focus is on the architectural forms and how the different parts of the complex work together.

Another way to spend time outdoors is the Stone Adventure Trail on the Zeilberg. It is suitable for pushchairs. Maroldsweisach thus offers different themes side by side: castle views and the townscape on the one hand, and an accessible adventure trail on the other.

Hiking Trails in the Wider Haßberge Travel Destination

In the wider Haßberge travel destination, the nature park offers a gently rolling low mountain landscape of mixed forests, fields, meadows and historic vineyards. The varied landscape is also part of the region’s character. There are several types of hikes to choose from: on the “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail,” you can explore the nature of the German Castle Corner on foot. The Haßberge Nature Park adventure tours are designed as half-day or full-day trips and follow circular routes back to the starting point.

Other routes differ considerably in length and course. The Amtsbotenweg crosses the Haßberge ridge from Altenstein to Königsberg. The Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail is a 190-kilometre long-distance trail through the German Castle Corner. The Celtic Adventure Trail covers 254 exciting kilometres, leading from the Werra via the Gleichberge and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. This makes it easy to distinguish shorter circular walks from longer routes by their described format and length.

A special viewpoint in the Haßberge travel destination is the Schwedenschanze. It is a circular rampart dating from the Hallstatt period, and its observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high summit on the Haßberg ridge. From there, the view stretches over mixed forest to the Grabfeld, as well as northwest to the heights of the Rhön and north into Thuringia. The Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge and adds to the region’s notable historic sites.

Culture and Regional Specialities

The Altenstein Castle Information Centre is a starting point for exploring castles, castle ruins and palaces in the Haßberge. It features an armoury with medieval knight’s armour and weapons, as well as a simulated archaeological dig with an adjoining research laboratory. Those interested in the region’s history of technology as well as its castles can visit the railway museum at Hofheim station to learn about the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. Registration is required to visit the interior; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05. Arrange your visit before setting off.

Regional food culture offers its own points of interest, too. Fatschenbrunn is known for “Hutzeln”: pears dried into dried fruit according to an old tradition. In the Abt-Degen wine valley, you can combine a hike with Franconian wine at one of the many hedge taverns and wine bars. Together, these examples show how hiking, culture and food experiences in the wider Haßberge travel destination differ from the specific sights in Maroldsweisach.
