Hofheim in Unterfranken lies in the heart of the low mountain landscape of Haßberge Nature Park. The town combines a historic half-timbered townscape with church art, railway history and opportunities for hiking and cycling. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to different interests: take in historic buildings, visit the railway museum or spend time on the trails in the surrounding area.
Half-timbered architecture and church art
Hofheim is a historic half-timbered town with fortified city gates, remnants of the old town wall and lovingly restored half-timbered houses. Among its sights is the parish church of St. John the Baptist. The historic pharmacy in the half-timbered ensemble also tells the story of the town: it was built in 1463 as a town residence and tithe court of the Barons Truchseß von Wetzhausen.
The parish church offers several points of interest for art history. The Late Gothic church was built around 1520; a sculpture of its patron saint stands in the gable. Inside are Late Gothic wooden sculptures, including a Crucifixion group dating from around 1460, as well as depictions of a holy deacon and Saint Barbara. The building, gable figure and wooden sculptures give an impression of the different forms of religious art represented in the church.
Railway history and archaeological traces
The railway museum in the former Hofheim station explores the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. The outdoor grounds feature a signal alley and various locomotives, including a small locomotive. The collection also includes passenger carriages with luggage compartments, a track maintenance vehicle and a handcar. The outdoor grounds can be visited at any time. Visits to the indoor areas require registration or an appointment; check the visiting arrangements before your visit.
Another chapter of history can be found at the Schwedenschanze. The ring rampart dates back to the Hallstatt period and lies on the Rennweg near Eichelsdorf. The observation tower offers panoramic views. The site therefore combines an archaeological connection with a viewpoint, while the railway museum focuses on the more recent history and technology of the local railway.
Park, hiking trails and cycling routes
Bettenburg Castle, a Renaissance castle northeast of Hofheim in the surrounding area, is not open to visitors. The adjoining Bettenburg Landscape Park is accessible at any time. Guided garden tours can be booked there; check the booking arrangements before your visit. If you are looking for a manageable hike, the Bettenburg Landscape Park Circular Trail offers a very easy 1.6-kilometre loop, with 40 metres of ascent and 40 metres of descent. Trail conditions can vary, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.
Hofheim is connected by an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails. For e-bike excursions, six themed routes into the surrounding Haßberge start at the information point on the market square. Check the specific route details before setting off. This offers several ways to plan: a short, clearly measured loop in the landscape park, themed e-bike routes and an extensive network of other hiking and cycling trails. Which option is right for you depends on whether you want to follow a specific circular route or plan your bike ride around a theme.
