Eltmann offers a range of themes to help you plan your day: a route with a specified distance and duration, activities on the Main, cycling and hiking options, and historic sites. The town lies on the edge of the Steigerwald and Haßberge Nature Parks. When choosing your accommodation and planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on tours, river activities or culture.

Trails, the Main and time outdoors

The Steigerwald Main Panorama Loop starts and ends at the Mainlände in Eltmann. It is 12.7 kilometres long, takes 3.75 hours and is rated moderate. These details give you a specific timeframe for planning your tour. Those who want to hike in the foothills of the Steigerwald will also find a suitable activity there. For cycling, you can use the Main Valley or Marien hiking trail.

Bicycles can be hired from the Eltmann Town Hall; check availability before use. People fish and go boating on the Main near Eltmann. If you plan to take part in either activity, check local access conditions and regulations in advance. Another historic connection to swimming: Eltmann outdoor pool was Bavaria’s first outdoor pool with a 50-metre pool.

The different options offer different ways to spend your time: the Steigerwald Loop can be planned around its duration and distance, while the Main, cycling routes and hikes offer other ways to enjoy the outdoors. You can tailor your stay to the activities that interest you most.

History and regional cuisine

The Ölberg Chapel is Eltmann’s oldest monument and dates back to the 13th century. It offers a specific point of interest if you want to learn about the town’s history. The larger Haßberge destination also includes the Wallburg of Eltmann. It is the ruin of a spur castle and an observation point on the former keep.

The Eltmann Beer Days also bring together local event history, food and drink. The two-day festival has been held in Eltmann since the 1990s. At the Beer Days, breweries serve their beer, and the food ranges from typical Franconian dishes to Mediterranean specialities. Dates and offerings may vary each year. Before your trip, check whether an event falls during your stay and what programme is planned.

Haßberge as a distinct regional context

The larger Haßberge destination encompasses a gently rolling low mountain region with extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and a varied landscape. The “Burgen & Schlösser Qualitätswanderweg” (Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail) passes through the German Castle Corner, offering opportunities to experience nature on foot. The Haßberge Nature Park’s adventure tours are designed as half-day or full-day outings and follow circular routes back to the starting point.

For longer hikes, the wider region offers routes on a different scale: the Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail is 190 kilometres long and runs through the German Castle Corner. The Celtic Adventure Trail covers 254 kilometres from the Werra via the Gleichberge and Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. These routes are very different in scale from the timeframe of the Eltmann loop.

The cultural history of the Haßberge extends beyond individual local landmarks. Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge; the Schwedenschanze is a ring-wall fortification dating from the Hallstatt period. A 487-metre-high summit of the Haßberg ridge lies by the Schwedenschanze observation tower. From there, the view stretches over mixed forest towards the Grabfeld and the distant heights of the Rhön to the northwest and Thuringia to the north.
