At the heart of Burgpreppach, the Baroque castle stands centrally, surrounded by old half-timbered farmsteads. The townscape thus combines architectural history with routes to sights and a complex Jewish history. There are different ways to plan your visit: the castle and townscapes in the municipal districts, a trail with marble runs, and the history commemorated at several locations.

Castle and Townscapes

Burgpreppach Castle is a former moated castle and a late Baroque building. It stands in the middle of the village. The present building was probably constructed between 1716 and 1730; before that, a moated castle dating from around 1525 stood on the site. The two dates show how the castle changed over several construction phases, although the date of the later building is recorded only as probable.

Expert-led tours of Burgpreppach Castle are available for small and large groups by prior appointment. If you would like to explore the castle on a guided tour, confirm the current arrangements with the operator before your visit. This allows you to plan this activity in advance rather than assume you can visit spontaneously.

The municipal districts also feature different forms of architectural heritage. Ibind has half-timbered farmsteads. The village ensemble in Leuzendorf is shaped by a country manor and a Rococo church. The half-timbered buildings, manor and church each provide a different focal point; together, they give an impression of the variety of townscapes within the municipality.

Trails and Activities

The Burgpreppach Marble Run Trail is just under 4 km long and passes through the village and by sights. Marble runs can be tried out along the trail. The route is suitable for strollers and has a total elevation gain of 50 m. Its length and elevation information help you fit the trail into your day’s plans, while trying out the marble runs offers a distinct activity.

There are also newly developed cycling and hiking trails in Burgpreppach and its districts. In the wider Haßberge travel region, the selection of cycling routes ranges from easier rides for Sunday outings to more challenging routes for expert cyclists. This regional variety offers a different planning option from a trail through the village. Route lists can change, so check the current selection before setting out on a specific cycling trip.

Jewish History and Remembrance

From 1681, Burgpreppach was the seat of the rabbi for the Oberländer/Grabfeld rural Jewish communities. In 1875, Abraham Hirsch founded the Talmud Torah school with a boarding school here. Male Jewish students received preparatory education there to become religious teachers; the school closed in 1938. A Jewish congregation existed in Burgpreppach until 1940.

The history also includes persecution under Nazi rule: 79 of the Jews living in Burgpreppach were murdered. A memorial stele in Wassergasse commemorates deported Jewish children who once lived there. A memorial stone was erected in memory of the Jewish congregation. The burial ground has an even longer history: in 1708, the local lord granted the Jews a field on the road to Eichelberg for use as a burial ground. The dates and memorial sites add another distinct dimension to the town’s history, alongside its architectural history.

More Perspectives in the Haßberge

In the wider Haßberge travel region, the nature park is a gently rolling upland area of mixed forests, fields, meadows, historic vineyards and varied landscapes. There are half-day and full-day adventure hikes, with circular routes that return to their starting point. The “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail” offers a way to experience nature on foot in the German Castle Corner. These are regional options; they do not describe the route of a trail through Burgpreppach.

Cultural and culinary themes are also part of the Haßberge travel region. Fatschenbrunn is known for making “Hutzeln”: pears are dried there as dried fruit using traditional methods. A hike through the Abt-Degen Wine Valley can be combined with Franconian wine at hedgerow inns and wine taverns. Individual establishments may change, so check what is currently open in advance.
