Bundorf offers several starting points for a trip focused on nature and culture. The “NATURE MEETS CULTURE” discovery trail begins in Schweinshaupten and partly follows the historic Wine Route. Schweinshaupten swimming lake, the biotope landscape at Höllgraben and a day-trip tip in Schweinshaupten offer different points of focus. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these interests you want to shape your trip.

Discovery Trail, Swimming Lake and Landscape

As its name suggests, the discovery trail brings nature and culture together and partly follows the historic Wine Route. Its route is a specific point of reference for anyone who wants to get to know Bundorf by following a named trail. The Jewish Cemetery in Schweinshaupten is also a day-trip tip. As current access has not been confirmed, please check visitor arrangements before your visit.

Schweinshaupten swimming lake is accessible by car, with parking available on site. Public buses also run to the lake via the central bus station (ZOB) in Bad Königshofen or the VGN railway station in Haßfurt. Check current bus connections before setting off. This lets you weigh up travelling by car against using public buses based on your specific travel plans, without assuming journey times or service frequency.

Another landscape feature can be found at Höllgraben near Kimmelsbach: a picturesque biotope landscape with a renaturalised stream. It offers a different focus from the discovery trail and the swimming lake. For trip planning, this means choosing between a named trail, a waterside destination and a landscape feature, rather than one excursion programme intended to suit every interest.

In the wider Haßberge destination

Beyond Bundorf, the wider Haßberge destination offers another setting for nature and culture enthusiasts. Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low mountain range with mixed forests, fields, meadows and historic vineyards. This landscape shapes the region’s hiking options. On the “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail”, you can explore the natural surroundings of the German Castle Corner on foot. The discovery trails in the nature park are designed as half-day or full-day outings and are circular routes that return to their starting point.

Other trails differ in length and route. The “Hutzeldorf” European Cultural Route in Fatschenbrunn is a circular trail of around six kilometres; information boards and leaflets provide information about the village and its cultural landscape. The Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail, by contrast, is a 190-kilometre long-distance trail through the German Castle Corner. The Celtic Adventure Trail runs for 254 kilometres from the Werra via the Gleichberge and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. These details show the different scales of the routes without implying a specific walking time. The Amtsbotenweg crosses the Haßberge ridge from Altenstein to Königsberg.

Haßberge also offers a range of cultural and historical points of interest. Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge; Schwedenschanze is a ring-wall fortification dating from the Hallstatt period. Its observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high summit of the Haßberg ridge. From there, the view stretches across mixed forest to the Grabfeld and to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia in the north. Wallburg near Eltmann, meanwhile, is the ruin of a spur castle and a viewpoint on the site of the former keep.

The railway museum in Hofheim station presents the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. Registration is required to visit the indoor spaces; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05. Confirm your appointment before setting off. A regional culinary speciality is “Hutzeln” from Fatschenbrunn: pears are dried there as dried fruit, following an old tradition. In the Abt-Degen wine valley, you can combine a hike with a taste of Franconian wine in local wine taverns and wine bars.
