A chapel on the site of the former counts’ and dukes’ castle, a route across three hills, and nearby Lake Thenner give Wartenberg a range of different attractions. The town’s history, outdoor activity and time by the water can each be enjoyed as a focus of your stay.

Castle Hill and Cultural Attractions

St. Nicholas Chapel stands on the summit of Nikolaiberg and is considered Wartenberg’s oldest church. It was probably built in the 13th century. It is believed to have been part of the former palatine castle complex, though this cannot be verified. The three existing churches bear witness to Wartenberg’s later history and add further historical layers to the picture of the older chapel.

Manhartsdorf is also part of the Wartenberg market municipality. In this village, a museum documents the relationship between breweries and inns.

Since December 2022, Wartenberg’s online museum has offered information about the market municipality and its artists, as well as a wide range of artworks. Art and local artists are another focus alongside the historical topics. The digital museum adds to the cultural insights.

Trails and Time by the Water

A district brochure published in 2019 describes a route starting at the market square and passing over Nikolaiberg, Herz-Jesu-Berg and Spatzenberg. It is 6.7 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 2 hours and 5 minutes and an ascent and descent of 140 metres each. These specific figures help with planning your time. You can allow separately for breaks and extra time to explore attractions of your choice. As the route description dates from 2019, it is best to check the route against current information before setting out.

The Wartenberg “Lido” on Lake Thenner, about four kilometres from Wartenberg, offers a different kind of stay. Visitors can swim, snorkel, bathe and sunbathe there. When planning, you can choose between a focus on local history and outdoor activity, or time by the water. Opening arrangements and facilities may change seasonally, so check the latest information before your visit.

Distinctive Attractions in Erding

The wider destination of Erding also offers its own cultural and leisure activities. The Erdinger Farmhouse Museum comprises 15 historic buildings relocated there from the district of Erding. It depicts rural economic and everyday life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The historic buildings provide an architectural setting for this subject. To reach the museum in Erding, take city bus routes 523 or 524, or regional bus routes 561 or 562, to the “Erding-Freilichtmuseum” stop. Check the connection in advance for your travel date.

In Erding itself, you can compare walking times with other activities: the hiking trails there are between 5.9 and 15 kilometres long, with estimated walking times ranging from one and a half to five hours. The themed trails take around an hour and lead through the old town, various districts or in the footsteps of artists. A guided tour of the town tower climbs 35 metres after 163 steps. From there, the view stretches across Erding and the surrounding area as far as Munich, and in föhn conditions, as far as the Alpine panorama. These options are in Erding and should be distinguished from the attractions in Wartenberg.

For food and browsing, the grounds of the Erdinger Farmhouse Museum also host a farmers’ market. Farmers from the district of Erding offer regional and seasonal goods and food there; the market is open on Fridays from 12:00 to 16:30. As market hours may change, check the date before making plans.
