Explore Erding and encounter the city’s history in different ways: the Farmhouse Museum focuses on rural life, while guided city tours explore the history of the city and its buildings. There are also themed trails and longer hiking routes with varying distances and estimated times. You can tailor your visit to your interests in architecture, local history or outdoor activities.
Rural life and Franz Xaver Stahl
Erding Farmhouse Museum comprises 15 historic buildings relocated here from the Erding district. It depicts the historic agricultural economy and way of life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The focus is on both the individual historic buildings and the way of life conveyed by the museum through them.
Another perspective on cultural history can be found at the former home and studio of Franz Xaver Stahl. It is furnished with historic furniture; the Biedermeier house dates from around 1840. The former studio has been preserved unchanged since the artist’s death. The Franz Xaver Stahl Museum has been open to the public as a museum since 2014. If you would like to visit, check the current visitor information in advance.
City history and views from the Town Tower
Guided city tours in Erding give residents and visitors an insight into the history of the city and its buildings. A tour of the Town Tower offers a different focus: the tower is one of the city’s oldest buildings, and after climbing 163 steps you reach a height of 35 metres. From there, the view extends across Erding and the surrounding area as far as Munich; in föhn conditions, it reaches the Alpine panorama. The city tour focuses on the history of the city and its buildings, while the tower tour also offers a view from above.
Themed trails, hikes and cycling tours
Themed trails in Erding take around an hour. They lead through the old town, through city districts or in the footsteps of artists. Hiking trails are different: they are between 5.9 and 15 kilometres long, with estimated walking times ranging from one and a half to five hours. One hiking trail leads to the Church of St Martin in Indorf. The time estimates illustrate the difference between a themed trail of around an hour and a hike lasting several hours. As conditions on individual routes may change, check them before setting off.
There are more than 28 varied, well-signposted cycling routes in the Erding district. They complement the walking routes with another way to explore the region; the tours mentioned and their characteristics refer to the Erding district.
Farmers’ market and getting to the museum
The farmers’ market on the grounds of Erding Farmhouse Museum is open every Friday from 12:00 to 16:30. Farmers from the Erding district sell regional and seasonal goods and food there. If you plan to visit the market, check the opening hours before setting off, as they may change.
The Farmhouse Museum can be reached on city bus routes 523 and 524 and regional bus routes 561 and 562, getting off at the Erding-Freilichtmuseum stop. Check the connections before travelling so you can plan using the latest route information.
