Oberding combines an early documentary mention with church art and a cycling route that passes through the village. For planning, it helps to distinguish between Oberding itself and the municipality: other churches and the fitness park are in other parts of the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether your priorities are in the village, across the municipality, or also in the wider destination of Erding.

Churches, Art and History

Oberding, or rather its predecessor settlement Dieng, was first mentioned in a document in 750 AD. St. George’s Church in Oberding is described as significant from an art-historical perspective and features Baroque and Rococo furnishings. Church art can also be found in other places in the municipality: St. Nicholas in Notzing, St. John the Baptist in Aufkirchen and St. Martin in Niederding are also described as significant art-historical churches and feature Baroque and Rococo furnishings.

A special feature of the parish church of St. Martin in Niederding is its ship-shaped pulpit; there are only a few similar examples in Bavaria. The moated castle in Notzing is one of the landmarks that bear witness to cultural and social development in the Middle Ages. In Aufkirchen, the base pyramid at the power station commemorates the land survey of 1801, for which the church tower in Aufkirchen served as a reference point. These places are in the municipality, not in the village of Oberding of the same name.

SkulpTour III also reflects local art history: the route features wooden sculptures created in the summer of 2017 at the third and final International Woodcarving Symposium in Oberding. This makes it possible to connect an art theme with specific places, while the churches add further historical highlights.

Cycling Routes and Activities in the Municipality

The “Ring der Regionen” cycling route passes via the airport and through Oberding on its way back to Erding. Another option is Cycle Tour 1, “Around the Airport”: it passes through the Schwaigermoos and, on the return leg, runs through Schwaig across fields and open countryside to Erding. Both route descriptions name Erding as the destination, but follow different courses.

The municipality covers large parts of the Erdinger Moos and the ridge between the Sempt and Dorfen rivers. The multi-generation fitness park is in Schwaig, outside the village of Oberding. It is open to visitors, easy to reach on foot, by bicycle or by car, and has free parking. Various workouts are possible outdoors. Check the park’s current availability before your visit.

Culture and Routes in the Wider Destination of Erding

In the wider destination of Erding, the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum complements local and church history with insights into the historic farming economy and way of life of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum comprises 15 historic buildings relocated from the district of Erding. A farmers’ market is held on its grounds every Friday from 12:00 to 16:30; farmers from the district offer regional and seasonal goods and food there. Check the market hours before your visit.

The city bus routes 523 and 524 and regional bus routes 561 and 562 are listed as serving the “Erding-Freilichtmuseum” stop for travel to the Bauernhausmuseum. Check the route details before setting out. Another way to see Erding is on the guided city tower tour: after climbing 163 steps, visitors reach a height of 35 metres. The view stretches across Erding and the surrounding area to Munich, and, on days with a Föhn wind, as far as the Alpine panorama.

The walking options in Erding also differ in the time they take. The themed trails take around an hour and lead through the old town, through city districts or in the footsteps of artists. The hiking trails are between 5.9 and 15 kilometres long; the estimated walking times range from one and a half to five hours. This lets you choose between a shorter themed walk and a longer hike, without conflating either option with the cycling routes in Oberding.
