In front of St. Martin’s parish church stands the oak artwork “Over 1,200 Years of Buch”. In Buch a.Buchrain, these bring together two cultural-historical themes; walks through the wooded countryside and a cycle route through the village offer a different focus. The choice ranges from church architecture to outdoor activities.

St. Martin: Late Gothic core and Rococo style

St. Martin in Buch a.Buchrain has a Late Gothic core structure and was substantially remodelled in the Rococo style in 1760 by Johan Baptist Lethner. The church is a hall church with a narrower, three-sided chancel. A tower with a tiered upper section and a moulded onion dome stands to the south. St. Martin is considered a characteristic example of a uniformly preserved Rococo country church of great artistic and art-historical significance.

The oak artwork in front of the church is titled “Over 1,200 Years of Buch”. It was created by sculptor Florian Brunner at the initiative of the woodcarving symposium. The church and artwork thus offer two different starting points for exploring Buch a.Buchrain: the architectural history of St. Martin and a work whose title evokes the village’s history.

Walking and cycling

The wooded countryside invites visitors to go for walks at any time of year. For a circular walk, the approximately six-kilometre-long B 2 trail, “To Richinger Berg”, is one option: it runs along the edge of the forest and offers views into the Kaltenbach Valley. Hiking trails B 3, “Around Kaltenbach”, and B 5, “To Müllnerbrünnel”, are also connected with Buch a.Buchrain.

The “Through the Erdinger Land” cycle route follows the Middle Isar Canal, the Sempt and the Schwillach, then continues through Buch am Buchrain. On the cycle route, the stretch to Buch a.Buchrain becomes somewhat more challenging because it crosses the Isen spring area. Check current route conditions before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two activities: for the B 2 trail, the distance, route and views are described; for the cycle route, the named waterways and more challenging section help guide your route choice.

Another excursion destination in Buch a.Buchrain is the trail to the fish ladder on the Hammerbach. The listed grain barn in Hammersdorf is also among the sights in the municipality of Buch a.Buchrain.

More discoveries in the wider destination of Erding

In the wider destination of Erding, the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum offers a different perspective on history: it depicts rural economic and everyday life in the 19th and early 20th centuries and comprises 15 historic buildings relocated from the Erding district. Its focus thus differs from that of St. Martin in Buch a.Buchrain, where the Rococo country church and its architectural history are at the centre.

In the wider destination of Erding, a guided tour of the town tower takes you into one of the town’s oldest buildings. After 163 steps, you reach a height of 35 metres; the view extends over Erding and the surrounding area to Munich and, when the föhn wind brings clear skies, as far as the Alps. Alongside the local church and landscape themes, Erding therefore offers further, distinct cultural attractions and places to visit.
