In Anzing, the history of pilgrimage and architecture come together. The parish and pilgrimage church of the Nativity of Mary remains a pilgrimage site to this day; its focal point is the miraculous image on the high altar. The former post station, now known as the Alte Post inn, also tells of the town’s long history.

Landscape and municipality

The municipality of Anzing comprises 18 districts. It lies in a flat landscape east of an old moraine running from south to north, on the northwestern edge of the Ebersberger Forst. This setting complements the buildings with views of the municipality and its surroundings.

Pilgrimage and church architecture

The church was built between 1677 and 1681 at the instigation of the Scapular Brotherhood. Its continuing significance as a pilgrimage site is associated with the miraculous image on the high altar. Another distinctive feature is the stucco decoration by Zwergers: it adorns the nave and choir and is predominantly geometric and linear in design. The church thus reveals both its pilgrimage history and the design of specific interior spaces.

The Alte Post and its architectural history

The building at HirnerstraĂźe 2, known as the Alte Post inn and formerly a post station, is a two-storey, plastered gabled building. Its features include two floor-level oriel windows, a Baroque portal and a steep pitched roof. The dating and the suspected older building fabric have different degrees of certainty: dendrochronological analysis dates the building to 1676; it probably has a core dating to the 16th century. It was remodelled and extended in the 19th century. Its history can thus be read as a sequence of a confirmed date, a possible older core and later alterations.

Places to take a break in the municipality

The playground and ball court on Lärchenstraße has a long slide, a boules court and a table-tennis table. These three amenities bring play, boules and table tennis together in one place. Café Oansa is on the ground floor of the municipal building, next to the Floraldikum flower shop. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance.

More places to explore in the wider Ebersberg destination

A lookout tower with 169 steps stands in the Ebersberger Forst. From the top, the view stretches across the Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on especially clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high are also visible. The Museum Wald und Umwelt offers a different perspective: it has stood right by the Ebersberger Forst since 2004 and focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology.

The Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is also part of the wider Ebersberg destination. It is a longstanding feature of the run-up to Christmas and takes place every year in the market town of Kirchseeon. Elaborate masks and costumes, drums and bells are hallmarks of the event. This makes it possible to distinguish a seasonal cultural attraction from the architectural and landscape features described as year-round.
