169 steps lead to the observation tower in Ebersberg Forest. Climb it for views across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. In particularly clear conditions, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high even come into view. The sweeping vista offers a unique perspective on the region’s woodland.

Experience and understand the forest

The Forest and Environment Museum has stood right beside Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It explores the history of forest use and forest ecology. The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre offers a different perspective, with a stronger focus on events: the centre, which has been awarded Bavaria’s “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal, runs programmes on education for sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjoining forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible.

Ebersberg Forest has marked hiking trails, an accessible forest nature trail and a wildlife enclosure. Alongside the observation tower and educational programmes, trails and opportunities to observe nature are also part of the forest experience.

Roman traces and Grafing culture

A branch of the Roman road led to Roman farmsteads in Poing, discovered during construction work in 2004. The route of the road and the finds give the town’s history a tangible connection to Roman times.

The Grafing City Museum offers special and permanent exhibitions that explore artistic and historical highlights from the surrounding area, as well as the lives and work of people in the region around Grafing. The museum lists its opening hours as Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.; it is closed on public holidays. Check the information before your visit.

Elkofen Castle is in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing town centre. It is one of the best-preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. A wide, deep moat surrounds the castle; it was once filled with water. The moat is a striking feature of the historic fortifications.

Farm life and pre-Christmas customs

The former Herrmannsdorf estate lies east of Glonn and is a model project for organic farming known well beyond the region. Once a year, Herrmannsdorfer hosts a large harvest festival on the farm. The fare includes delicacies from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The barns and workshops also open their doors.

In Markt Kirchseeon, the Perchten procession is a fixture of the pre-Christmas season and attracts many visitors every year. Elaborately designed masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells create a striking atmosphere. The two events bring different seasonal highlights: the farm festival is associated with harvest thanksgiving, while the Perchten procession takes place in the run-up to Christmas.
