Neustadt b.Coburg offers a variety of reasons to stay: the German Toy Industry Museum traces the story from home-based work to factory production, the Inner German Border Education Centre focuses on a different historical topic, and Muppberg is a destination for walks and hikes.

Toy history and collection

The German Toy Industry Museum presents the history of the German toy industry, from home-based work to factory production. The international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries; its size may change as the collection changes. This offers two perspectives side by side: the development of toy manufacturing in Germany and an internationally focused collection.

The museum also offers hands-on activities and a museum trail. These complement the exploration of industrial history and the collection with interactive formats. Comparing the two topics lets visitors focus either on the development of production or on the variety of traditional costume dolls.

History of the Inner German Border

The Inner German Border Education Centre explores the history of the Inner German Border from the Second World War, through the Cold War and the opening of the border, to the present day. This gives it a different historical focus from the German Toy Industry Museum: here, the subject is the border’s development over several periods; there, it is toy manufacturing and the collection.

Muppberg and collectors’ fair

Muppberg, Neustadt’s local mountain, offers opportunities for walks and hikes. The Arnoldhütte offers a good view over the surrounding countryside. Alongside the historical topics, there are also outdoor activities to choose from.

The annual Collectors’ Fair can be a reason to plan a trip in its own right. It takes place from Friday to Saturday at the Frankenhalle in Neustadt and focuses on antique dolls and bears; international exhibitors take part.

The fair’s dates may be a key factor when planning.

More topics in the wider Coburg destination

The wider Coburg destination offers other distinct places to visit. In Ahorn is the Alte Schäferei, a Baroque estate sheep farm built in 1713. It displays farming and craft tools, painted furniture and other evidence of the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The Panoramaweg in Ahorn is 7 km long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours and is suitable for pushchairs.

In SeĂźlach, the old town is surrounded by a fully preserved town wall with defensive towers and three gates. From April to September, regular guided tours of the old town take place there every Sunday at 2 p.m.; no registration is required.

Another place in the wider Coburg destination, shaped by its landscape, is Froschgrundsee in Rödental. The lake is a reservoir; cycling and hiking trails lead to and around it, and a biotope borders it.
