Toy-making history and regional culture

In the Coburg destination, a particularly broad perspective on history leads to Neustadt bei Coburg: the Museum of German Toy Making traces the history of the German toy industry from home-based work to factory production. The international collection of traditional costume dolls offers a second dimension. It comprises around 800 exhibits from over 100 countries. This means that the development of an industry and an international collection are both brought into focus in one museum. Hands-on activities and a museum quiz offer further ways to engage actively with the museum.

You can encounter another side of history in Ahorn. The Alte Schäferei is a Baroque estate sheepfold built in 1713. It displays objects from farming and crafts, painted furniture and other artefacts from the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. While Neustadt focuses on the toy industry, Ahorn turns the spotlight on farming and craft objects. The subjects are therefore clearly distinct: one explores the development of an industry, the other historical artefacts from agriculture and crafts.

Seßlach: Town wall and field monuments

Seßlach brings history to life in its urban setting: the Old Town is surrounded by a fully preserved town wall with defensive towers and three gates. Regular guided tours of the Old Town take place every Sunday at 2 p.m. from April to September; no registration is required. Check the latest tour information before your visit. The Marterl Trail around Seßlach offers a different perspective. On the hike, you can learn about the field monuments, their history and their religious significance. Hiking trails, water and views

The Panorama Trail in Ahorn is 7 km long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours and is suitable for pushchairs. The specific time estimate can help you fit the hike into your day. In Rödental, the Froschgrundsee is a reservoir; cycling and hiking trails lead to it and run around it, and a biotope borders the lake. In contrast to the Panorama Trail, the focus here is on the reservoir and the trails for cyclists and hikers. A nature trail passes by Lauterburg. You can climb the Henneberger Warte observation tower free of charge and look out over the Rodachtal.

Rosenau Palace in Rödental was the birthplace of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This specific biographical connection adds to the varied historical and scenic discoveries in the destination.
