Stegaurach’s distinctive features include circular and educational trails, the Siebenschläfer Chapel and a religious observance with a long history. The trails focus on different themes: they lead to opportunities to observe nature, explore ecological and historical subjects, or connect chapels along a longer route. This makes it easy to choose activities based on your interests and the stated trail lengths.

Circular and educational trails in Stegaurach

Hiking trail S1 is a 9.3 km family-friendly loop. It starts at Siebenschläfer Chapel, passes through Mühlendorf and Seehöflein, and returns to the starting point. The route combines a clearly defined loop with two intermediate locations. For a different way to explore the landscape, the Artenvielfalt im Aurachtal (Biodiversity in the Aurach Valley) themed trail has stations covering how to engage with nature, as well as different habitats and species. Each station offers a practical example and a tip for observing nature; the trail invites visitors to experience nature with all their senses.

The water education trail in the municipality of Stegaurach runs between Höfen and Mühlendorf and has been in place since 2005. It focuses on ecological, landscape-related and historical aspects of the Aurach Valley. The themed trails therefore differ not only in name, but also in their focus: biodiversity and observation take center stage on one trail, while the other explores themes relating to the Aurach Valley.

Hiking distances and Siebenschläfer Chapel

The 20 km 7-Kapellen-Weg (Seven Chapels Trail) is marked with a “K,” passes seven chapels and also starts at Siebenschläfer Chapel in Stegaurach. Comparing the distances directly, S1 is the shorter of the two routes at 9.3 km; at 20 km, the Seven Chapels Trail covers considerably more ground. Check the conditions on the Seven Chapels Trail locally before setting out.

Siebenschläfer Chapel connects the routes with a historical and religious story of its own. In 1696, it was replaced on the same site by a larger stone building. Inside, an altar relief depicts the seven resting holy sleepers; above them is God the Father, surrounded by clouds and angels’ heads. The annual procession of supplication is another religious observance: since 1860, the parish community has held it at the chapel every year on June 27. It is distinct from the hiking trails and is part of the town’s religious history.

Culture and nature in the broader Bamberg destination

The broader Bamberg destination offers further cultural and nature-related attractions. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s great Baroque complexes. It houses an extensive gallery featuring works of art-historical importance by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, the Ebrach Abbey complex was extensively remodeled by Leonhard Dientzenhofer into a palace-like Baroque complex. Its Gothic church and rose window were preserved. These buildings offer different perspectives on Baroque architecture: Weissenstein Palace with its gallery, and the remodeled abbey complex, where a Gothic architectural feature was preserved.

Museums also offer distinctive attractions in the broader Bamberg destination. The Levi Strauss Museum – Birthplace Buttenheim tells the life story of Levi Strauss and the history of his famous blue jeans. Visitors more interested in nature and landscapes will also find specific attractions there: the Methusalem Tour around Ebrach passes through the Spitzenberg nature reserve to trees up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimeters thick. At the Steigerwald treetop walk, visitors can hand-feed mouflons in the petting area. As animal enclosures and visitor access can change, check whether this activity is available beforehand.

Seven culinary tours showcase the Bamberg region’s food and drink: three cycling tours and four hiking routes lead to floodplain landscapes, viewpoints, places to stop for refreshments and regional producers. As tour offerings can change, check the latest route information before planning. The Eulenwand near Tiefenellern is also listed among the climbing areas in the Bamberg region. The broader destination therefore offers a range of options, from architecture and museums to hiking, cycling and climbing, while Stegaurach’s own attractions center on circular trails, educational trails and Siebenschläfer Chapel.
