Baroque and Monastic History

Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s great Baroque complexes. Its extensive gallery houses art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. For culture enthusiasts, architecture and painting come together here: the complex makes a Baroque statement, while the gallery brings together works from four national painting traditions.

The Ebrach Monastery complex can also be understood through the contrast between its different building phases. In the 18th century, Leonhard Dientzenhofer extensively transformed it into a castle-like Baroque complex; the Gothic church with its rose window was preserved. Thus, Baroque remodelling and a surviving Gothic feature stand side by side within the same complex. This combination offers a striking way to explore different stylistic periods.

The Ebrach History Museum has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery since 2004. It focuses on both the history of the monastery and that of the market town. Its subject matter therefore encompasses two perspectives on Ebrach: local history and the history of the Cistercian monastery.

Nature Experiences with Different Highlights

In the petting area at the Steigerwald treetop walk, visitors can hand-feed mouflons. Animal enclosures and visitor facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit. This is an up-close animal experience focused on observing and feeding, while the Methusalem Tour turns your attention to old trees.

The Methusalem Tour around Ebrach passes through the Spitzenberg Nature Reserve to trees that are up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick. Their age and diameter give the route a specific nature theme: the focus is not only on trees as part of the landscape, but also on their remarkable size and great age.

Culinary Routes, Art and Active Pursuits

Seven culinary tours explore the Bamberg region through its food: three cycling tours and four hiking routes lead to idyllic river meadows, viewpoints, places to stop for refreshments and regional producers. The division makes the type of tour the first point of distinction: you can choose between cycling and hiking routes, with culinary stops and landscape impressions rounding out the mix. As the range of routes may change, check the latest information before planning your trip.

Around Lohndorf, the Franconian Sculpture Trail combines art and nature. Near Tiefenellern, the Eulenwand is one of the Bamberg region’s climbing areas. The options range from a route focused on art and nature to a climbing area—two different ways to experience the landscape and get active.

The Levi Strauss Museum – Birthplace Buttenheim tells the life story of Levi Strauss and the story of his famous blue trousers. Compared with Ebrach’s local and monastic histories, Buttenheim adds a personal biography and the history of a garment to the cultural mix. Bamberg therefore offers a range of cultural perspectives: architecture and monastic history, works of art, regional routes, and the history of everyday life and individual lives.
