Giechburg Castle towers above Scheßlitz at an elevation of 530 m. The town lies at the entrance to Franconian Switzerland, between Bamberg and Bayreuth and at the foot of Giechburg Castle and Gügel. Scheßlitz is also associated with juniper-covered slopes and limestone sinter streams, considered characteristic landscape features of Franconian Switzerland. Hiking trails within the town area, a longer cycle route through Scheßlitz and cultural offerings provide different options for a stay.

Hiking with named waypoints

In autumn 2015, nine hiking trails of varying lengths were designated within the town area of Scheßlitz. Check trail conditions before setting out. Hiking Route A is described in particular detail: it is about 9.8 km long and passes Gügel, Giechburg Castle and the Jewish cemetery. The approximate distance and named locations give you points of reference for fitting this hike into your stay. The other designated trails offer different distances and thus alternatives to Route A.

East of Giechburg Castle, the Catholic branch and pilgrimage church of St. Pankratius, also known as Gügelkirche, rises atop a steep rock. It is about a 15-minute walk from the castle. This means that two distinct buildings can be seen in the area around the castle: Giechburg Castle and St. Pankratius, which is designated as a pilgrimage church.

Cycling route through Scheßlitz

The Main Valley–Leinleiter Valley Cycle Route offers a different perspective. Its total 50 km route runs from Staffelstein to Ebermannstadt and passes through Scheßlitz. In comparison, the approximately 9.8 km Hiking Route A is a shorter, locally described option with several named waypoints. The two distances refer to different activities and route scales. If you include both hiking and cycling in your plans, you can consider them separately rather than treating them as one continuous route.

Town walk and theatre

A walk through Scheßlitz introduces selected buildings. It offers an independent way to explore the town’s architecture and thus has a different focus from Hiking Route A. For several years, the Franconian Switzerland Theatre Summer has also presented guest performances in Scheßlitz. Specific programmes vary over time; check the announced dates for your travel period.

Culture in the wider destination of Bamberg

The wider destination of Bamberg includes other distinct cultural themes, including places in Ebrach and Pommersfelden. In the 18th century, the monastery complex in Ebrach was extensively remodelled by Leonhard Dientzenhofer into a palace-like Baroque complex; the Gothic church with its rose window was preserved. Since 2004, the Museum of Ebrach History has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery. It covers the history of the market town and the monastery.

Near Pommersfelden, Weissenstein Palace is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes. Its extensive gallery includes works of art-historical significance by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. These regional cultural sites sit alongside Scheßlitz’s hiking trails, landscape features and walk past selected buildings; they are distinct themes within the wider destination of Bamberg.
