Oberhaid offers several options for a stay: a natural forest reserve and a teaching garden, the historic cellar complex in Unterhaid, cultural venues and routes for getting active. The contrast between these themes is particularly clear at the cellars: they tell the story of their former use and also play a role in protecting bats.

Nature and Getting Active in Oberhaid

The Seelaub natural forest reserve is notable for its untouched character. The Oberhaid district teaching garden brings together a range of plant themes across 1,200 square metres: medicinal plants, historic crops and dye plants, bee-friendly flowering plants, an orchard meadow and wild shrubs. The garden can thus be explored through its diverse plant areas, rather than focusing on just one theme.

There is a Nordic walking course with three levels of difficulty on the northern outskirts of town. Another way to explore the area is the four-kilometre Bat Trail. It starts at the cellar lane; seven stops provide information about native bat species. Check local conditions before setting off.

You can also choose a route by bike: the easy Rennweg EXTRA Tour 1 is 30.8 kilometres long. It runs from Oberhaid via Schönbrunn and Gleisenau Castle through the Main floodplains and back to Oberhaid. The Bat Trail and the cycling tour clearly differ in both length and mode of travel. Route conditions for the cycling tour may change; check them before setting off.

The Cellar Complex in Unterhaid

The historic cellar complex in Unterhaid dates back to the 18th century. It comprises 29 privately owned individual cellars and a summer cellar. During the cold season, one of the rock cellars serves as a winter roost for endangered bat species. The cellar complex thus connects a tangible piece of local history with an ecological role tied to the time of year.

Between May and September, groups can learn about the lives of nocturnal animals and other inhabitants of the former beer cellar, as well as the geological layers of the hill. Confirm the visiting arrangements in advance. The seasonal food and drink offering is separate: in the summer months, weather permitting, visitors can enjoy beer and a Franconian snack at the cellar complex. Before travelling, check whether it will be open during your visit.

The Staffelbacher Spitzelberg and Unterhaider Röthla vineyards are also located within the municipality. Typical Franconian dishes and snacks are also available. Individual businesses and their opening times may vary.

Mills, Churches and Cultural Venues

The Old Mill dates back to 1670 and underwent extensive renovation from 2017 onwards. Along with the open mill stream, a small café and the newly redesigned village square, it offers places to relax. Plan a visit to the café according to current conditions.

The KunstMühle is another cultural venue in Oberhaid. It combines historic charm with modern spaces for workshops, exhibitions and community engagement. Individual programmes may change. The annual Oberhaid pilgrimage ends at St. Bartholomew’s Parish Church; its date varies from year to year. Check the date for the relevant year if you want to plan your visit around it.

The history of local architecture can also be seen in specific places. The listed Roman Catholic branch church of St. Cyriacus in Staffelbach has a Gothic choir tower dating from the 14th century. The Mater Dolorosa cemetery chapel is also one of Oberhaid’s attractions.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Oberhaid, the area’s varied highlights can help you plan your stay: nature and plants, the history of the cellars and town, ecclesiastical architecture, or routes on foot and by bike. For seasonal group visits, the pilgrimage and weather-dependent activities, it is worth checking the relevant dates and conditions in advance.
