The Romanesque keep is the oldest building in Lisberg Castle and houses the castle dungeon; the castle has never been destroyed. For the local hiking trails, comparing their lengths provides a practical basis for planning: the Castle Loop is 6 km long, while the Friedleinsbrunnen Trail (L1) is 12 km long, twice as long. GPX files for the trails are available on the municipal website.

Castle, hiking trails and remembrance

Every year, the municipality of Lisberg commemorates its former neighbours, who suffered exclusion, deprivation of rights and degradation as a result of Nazi policies. They had to leave their lives behind and flee abroad—mostly to the USA—or were deported to Izbica, a ghetto near Lublin. This act of remembrance broadens the view of Lisberg’s history beyond its castle and architectural history.

Trabelsdorf and its surroundings

Trabelsdorf is located near Lisberg. Trabelsdorf Castle was built in its present form around 1700. Trabelsdorf Castle Park has an educational trail about the diversity of deciduous trees, with informative signs, as well as an herb garden. Stand-up paddleboarding and the use of sail-less surfboards are permitted at nearby Trabelsdorf Lake. The literary hiking trail connects the castles in Trabelsdorf and Dankenfeld. For practical planning, it is advisable to check the current route.

More cultural and nature experiences in the wider Bamberg destination

The wider Bamberg destination offers more cultural and nature experiences. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s great Baroque complexes. Its extensive gallery houses art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, the monastic complex in Ebrach was extensively redesigned by Leonhard Dientzenhofer as a palace-like Baroque complex; the Gothic church with its rose window was preserved. The Museum of the History of Ebrach has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery since 2004 and explores the history of the market town and the monastery. In Buttenheim, the Levi Strauss Museum—Birthplace Buttenheim tells the life story of Levi Strauss and the history of his famous blue trousers. Baroque architecture, monastic history and these life stories offer a range of different cultural themes.

In the Bamberg region, the Eulenwand near Tiefenellern is one of the climbing areas. At the Steigerwald Treetop Walk near Ebrach, visitors can hand-feed mouflons in the petting area. Check the latest information before your visit.

Seven culinary tours showcase the Bamberg region’s food: three cycling tours and four hiking routes lead to floodplain landscapes, viewpoints, places to stop for refreshments and regional producers. Near Ebrach, the Methuselah Tour leads through the Spitzenberg Nature Reserve to trees up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick. While the culinary tours combine scenery, views and places to enjoy local food, the Methuselah Tour focuses on old trees and the protected area. Check the latest information on available tours when planning your visit.
