Zusmarshausen and all its districts lie within the Augsburg-Western Forests Nature Park. This offers a range of options for planning a trip, with different points of focus: a cycling route through the town, walking and nature trails, and Roman finds in the museum. If you are looking for accommodation in Zusmarshausen, you can first consider whether cycling, outdoor activities or culture should shape your stay. The options differ in their themes and route characteristics.

Cycling Route and Getting There

The Zusam Cycle Path runs through Zusmarshausen on the section from Dinkelscherben to Donauwörth. It is signposted throughout and mostly follows side roads or routes away from traffic. For finding your way by bike, it is helpful to know both where the route lies between the two towns and what its character is like. This distinguishes the cycling route from the walking trails in Zusmarshausen and the surrounding area, which have their own nature and walking themes.

If you are travelling by car, Zusmarshausen has direct access to the Zusmarshausen junction on the A 8 Munich–Stuttgart (E 52).

Circular Routes and Nature Information

A trail leads all the way around Lake Roth in Zusmarshausen and invites you to enjoy a leisurely walk surrounded by nature. The Zusamaue Nature Trail offers a different focus: it is an idyllic circular walking route south of Zusmarshausen and Gabelbach, near the Rücklenmühle mill. Along the trail, visitors can learn about local wildlife and plant life. It was established in 1997–1998 by the Zusam Landscape Conservation Association.

Nearby, the “Am Horn” Forest Discovery Trail near Zusmarshausen introduces visitors to 25 tree species on information boards. At the turning point, a covered rest area invites you to enjoy a snack or take a break. The routes offer different ways to experience the landscape: a leisurely walk by Lake Roth, insights into wildlife and plant life at Zusamaue, and information about tree species and a place to rest at Am Horn.

Roman Finds in the Museum

The Zusmarshausen Museum displays finds from the Roman bridge settlement of “Pontone,” which stood on the Augsburg–Mainz Roman road. This adds a cultural dimension to the options for cycling and enjoying nature. The finds connect a museum visit with the history of a Roman bridge settlement and its location on a named Roman road. If you would like to shape your stay around different interests, this historical theme is an option alongside outdoor activities.

More Trails in the Wider Augsburg Destination

Those exploring the wider Augsburg destination will find more distinctive places to visit. The Bonstetten LandArt Art Trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular walking route; the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. The three-kilometre Meditation Trail runs from Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to Weiherhof, along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzach Valley. The stated distances make it possible to compare the two routes directly, and their themes also differ: sculptures on the art trail, and a meditation route from the abbey to Weiherhof.

Another activity in the Augsburg destination is offered by Westwood Alpacas, which regularly runs alpaca walks and excursions through the nature park. Alongside circular routes and themed walking trails, the region also offers this kind of excursion.
