Art along hiking trails, nature experiences and the history of technology offer different perspectives for discovering the Augsburg travel destination. The Bonstetten LandArt art trail combines a hiking route with sculptures; the meditation trail runs along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley. Nearby, the Lechmuseum Bayern adds the history of hydropower to this perspective. Trails, landscapes and technical heritage thus sit side by side.

Art along the trail: LandArt in Bonstetten

The Bonstetten LandArt art trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route. Along the way, artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. Art and the artist’s explanations are therefore part of the experience, while the circular route makes its layout clear. If you would also like to discover sculpture on a hike, this trail offers a specific focus.

Two trails, different route profiles

The three-kilometre meditation trail runs from Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to Weiherhof along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley. It is shorter than the LandArt art trail; its endpoints are also specified, whereas the Bonstetten trail is described as a circular hiking route. The length and route offer a concrete comparison when choosing a trail for your stay. The district of Augsburg also has a well-developed network of cycle paths. This gives you different ways to get around when planning your trip: two specifically described hiking trails and a cycling network across the district.

Nature park and other excursions

The nature park also provides a regional setting: the Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are part of the Augsburg — Western Forests Nature Park. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. If you are looking for another kind of nature experience alongside the trails described above, these activities can offer a distinct option for planning your excursions.

The history of technology nearby

The Lechmuseum Bayern is housed in the historicist-style building of the Langweid hydroelectric power station, which began operating in 1907. A preserved original hydropower turbine dating from 1907 can be seen in a two-storey turbine hall that visitors can enter. The power station still generates electricity today and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Augsburg Water Management System.” Here, a preserved turbine from 1907 and the power station’s ongoing electricity generation come together. For culture enthusiasts, this offers a different perspective from art and hiking trails: the focus is on hydropower, a technical structure and its place within the World Heritage Site. The Augsburg Water Management System comprises 22 World Heritage properties, including weirs, water pumping stations, power stations, fountains and a canoe route. Its scope thus extends beyond electricity generation to include other ways of managing water.
