Wehringen lies on the Singold, near the Wertach and on the edge of the Augsburg-Westliche Wälder Nature Park. In the town center, the Generationenpark Pfarrgarten is a green space of just under 3,000 square meters, right on the Singold. Seating and outdoor fitness equipment are available, along with opportunities to play boules, chess and table tennis. Everyone is welcome to pick herbs in the herb garden. The park thus combines a central green space for relaxing with several opportunities to be active.

In western Wehringen, on the edge of the western forests, you’ll find the water-treading facility and the barefoot path right next to it. Access to this area is via a paved farm track and is only possible on foot or by bicycle. Check the current access information before your visit. The “Bildungsbrücke” is on a walking path along the Singold. Surrounded by fields and meadows, it offers a nature experience by the stream. Two gently sloping sections of the Wertach’s bank invite visitors to linger; they also form ecologically valuable shallow-water areas.

Location can help you choose between the green spaces and waterside spots: the Pfarrgarten is centrally located, while the water-treading facility and barefoot path are in western Wehringen.

Churches and Architectural History

The parish church of St. George brings together different periods of construction: its choir dates from the Gothic period, in the 14th or 15th century, while the interior was redesigned between 1741 and 1747 with ceiling frescoes, stucco and a high altar. The church also includes the wall of the former fortified cemetery, with loopholes, buttresses, two gates and a figure niche dating from the 16th century.

The two Catholic chapels also differ in form and date. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle is a rectangular building with a three-sided apse and a roof turret topped by an onion dome; it was built around 1700 and enlarged in 1751. The Catholic Gruftkapelle St. Antonius, by contrast, is a round building with a domed roof in the late Art Nouveau style, created by Heinrich DĂĽll and Georg Petzold in 1918/20. Together, the chapels illustrate the difference between a building from around 1700 and a work from the early 20th century.

Traces of the Past and Local Traditions

Around 85 mining pits from an early to high medieval ore-mining area can be found in the Wehringer Hochwald. Another historical thread is the “Leitenbad”: it operated in Wehringen from around 1490 until the 17th century and was considered an important spa in 16th- and 17th-century spa literature. Its decline is believed to have taken place in the 17th century. The Wehringen pilgrimage to the Holy Mountain at Andechs dates back to a vow made during the plague in 1717.

The Historisches Wehringer Dorffest was first held in 1990 to mark the municipality’s 1,000th anniversary and takes place every five years. The festival features craft and artistic demonstrations, as well as numerous stalls offering food and drink. Individual dates and program items may vary; if you’re planning to attend the festival during your trip, check the date in advance.
