A nine-metre-long model shows the Lech as a natural, free-flowing river: at the Naturmuseum Königsbrunn, you can observe fish at underwater viewing points. Together with museums exploring local history, Königsbrunner Heide and Lake Ilsesee, the town offers a range of ways to spend your time between culture and nature.

Museums and History in Königsbrunn

The Naturmuseum presents local natural habitats, including the Lech, the heaths, and life in and around water and in the forest. Visitors who would like to explore these subjects in more depth can book tours led by cultural guides.

The Archaeological Museum displays a fully preserved skeleton with grave goods from the Bell Beaker period. Other archaeological finds from the southern district of Augsburg are presented in their regional context. The Lechfeldmuseum offers another perspective on local history: its themed rooms explore Königsbrunn’s beginnings and the everyday life, living conditions and clothing of the farming settlers who founded the town in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

You can also discover history in the townscape. Two information pillars mark the historical trail about the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. Another striking archaeological feature of the landscape is the perfectly straight, visible above-ground embankment of the Via Claudia Augusta, which runs for eleven kilometres between Königsbrunn-Neuhaus and Untermeitingen. It is one of the longest remaining continuous stretches of road and is relatively well preserved.

Königsbrunn is home to the Mercateum, which houses the world’s largest globe based on historical cartography. An exhibition inside explores trade with India and other countries in Asia, Africa, Central America and South America. On a guided tour, visitors can learn about how the globe was made, historical maps and the history of long-distance trade; check current tour dates in advance. The Gregor Kruk Gallery is also on display in the town hall foyer. It is thought to house one of the largest collections of works by Gregor Kruk.

Heathland, Water and Relaxation

Königsbrunner Heide is one of the few remaining parts of the Lech Valley flora corridor and a habitat for migrating animal and plant species. When visiting, stay on designated paths and leave bicycles at the edge of the heath. The surrounding area is used by walkers, joggers, inline skaters and cyclists, while the heath itself has its own visitor rules.

A nature trail about 2.5 kilometres long along the Lochbach shares information about the natural environment. It runs through a nature reserve, offering a distinctive way to explore the area’s landscapes. Towards Lake Mandichosee, the Schaffner-Bruck bridge once again enables pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Lochbach.

Lake Ilsesee, on the northeastern edge of town, is a closed body of water fed by groundwater and formed by gravel extraction. It has been developed as a local recreation area. There are swimming areas for families and a water rescue station. The lake also attracts divers: its varied underwater flora and fauna are highly regarded, and there is a diving centre on the eastern shore. If you are planning a dive, check the operator’s latest information in advance.

At Park der Sinne, the focus is on sensory experiences and relaxation, with features including an herb garden, a barefoot path and Kneipp pools. The Kneipp facilities are fed by groundwater. The local nature experiences offer distinct contrasts: Lake Ilsesee focuses on water and its underwater world, while the heath is known for its habitats and designated paths.
