Hirschbach is a municipality in the Amberg-Sulzbach district of Bavaria, located in the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. The village lies in the Hirschbachtal at an elevation of approximately 440 to 600 metres above sea level. Hiking among rocks, caves and viewpoints, as well as climbing routes and via ferratas, are defining features of the area. Planning therefore depends above all on whether you want to explore the landscape on foot or include a climbing tour.

Hiking among rocks, caves and viewpoints

A hike starts at the Hirschbach village square and takes in the rocks, caves and viewpoints of the Bavarian Jura in the Upper Palatinate. The description gives the tour a clear theme; by contrast, the climbing options differ in their routes, safety equipment and time required. When choosing a tour, you can decide whether to focus on the landscape or make climbing sections the main attraction.

Climbing options in the Hirschbachtal

The Mittelbergwand has more than 59 different climbing routes. The Höhenglücksteig starts on the southwest side of the Schwarzer Brand rock massif in the Hirschbachtal. A children's via ferrata facility is located shortly before its entrance. You can also bypass the Höhenglücksteig without using its cables or safety equipment. This gives you several options: climbing routes on the Mittelbergwand, the Höhenglücksteig itself, or a bypass that does not use its safety equipment.

Hiking and climbing times on the Norissteig

The Norissteig starts in Fischbrunn and ends in Mittelhirschbach. It is approximately six kilometres long. Allow about 1.5 hours for hiking, or approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours for climbing. These time estimates apply to different ways of using the route. For the same distance, your day’s schedule will therefore differ considerably depending on whether you plan to hike or climb it.

The Norissteig is equipped with steel pins and cables and does not exceed difficulty grade 1. Nevertheless, it should not be attempted without protective equipment. Before setting out, check the technical route conditions and your personal safety requirements.

Another hiking option in Amberg-Sulzbach

The Felsenweg is a separate hiking option in the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination. The 2.7-kilometre route starts in Sackdilling, passes through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher, and takes about 45 minutes to walk. By comparison, the hike starting at Hirschbach village square is described mainly in terms of its rocks, caves and viewpoints. The two descriptions offer different points of reference: the Felsenweg gives its distance and walking time, while the Hirschbach hike highlights the sights along the way.

Tour-planning information

Entering the cave along the route is prohibited from October 1 to March 31; check this seasonal restriction before setting out. Making fires is prohibited year-round.
