Villarodin-Bourget can be discovered through a variety of experiences: its historic village layout, traces of its fortress history, and trails in the Vallon de l’Orgère. More than a third of the municipality’s area lies within the core zone of the Parc national de la Vanoise. When planning your trip, it’s worth choosing your priorities first: architecture and history offer a different experience from the trails in the Vallon, the ski slopes of La Norma or the Rocher des Amoureux climbing crag.

Village Architecture and Historic Traces

Along Rue Saint Antoine, traditional houses open onto a spacious square overlooked by the Church of Saint-Julien. The church is nestled among the village houses; its bell tower is topped with a tuff spire. Covered passageways crossing the streets and projecting stair towers also shape Villarodin’s character. Side streets lead to walled gardens and paths into the nearby forest.

At the exit from Villarodin towards Avrieux stands the Chapel of Saint-Sébastien. After falling into disrepair several times, it was relocated and rebuilt from the 16th century onwards. Its last restoration took place in 1931; today it is considered a simple oratory. Another art-historical detail is the altarpiece of Saint Catherine: smooth columns decorated with faux marble frame a central niche containing a statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

Visits to the Church of Saint-Julien were planned for summer 2026 by arrangement with the town hall. Check in advance whether a visit is possible on your planned date.

Fort Saint-Gobain: History on Site

Fort Saint-Gobain is a well-preserved, now demilitarised fortification of the Alpine Maginot Line from the 1939–1945 war. It is managed by an association and is open to the public. The complex includes galleries, barracks and technical rooms; the combat blocks are also accessible. A marked circuit allows visitors to explore independently. Information panels are available in French, Italian and English. An outdoor path leads up to the fort and offers open views across the valley.

Trails in the Vallon de l’Orgère

The Vallon de l’Orgère is an important gateway to the core zone of the Parc national de la Vanoise. The park also has a refuge there. The discovery trail follows a marked route with visual, audio and tactile information features. As of August 2026, a route of around 1.4 kilometres had been awarded the “Promenade confort” label and was accessible to people with reduced mobility. Features along the way include tactile elements, a model and audio experiences. Check before your visit whether the conditions are suitable for you.

La Norma and Other Activities

The La Norma ski area lies mostly within Villarodin-Bourget and has 65 kilometres of ski slopes. Norma Loops is also open year-round: the 900-metre-long alpine coaster runs through the La Norma forest and has ten bends, six bridges crossing the road, and three complete 360-degree turns.

The Rocher des Amoureux offers a different kind of activity. This approximately 70-metre-high climbing crag has around a hundred routes graded from 4a to 8a. Climbing is therefore a distinct option alongside the ski slopes of La Norma and the cultural sites.

Whether you are interested in village history, the fort, trails in the national park or activities in La Norma, Villarodin-Bourget offers several distinct ways to plan your trip.
