In Soyans, historic buildings span the 12th century through to the Renaissance. There is also a harvest of black truffles, a truffle event in February 2023, a seasonal bathing area and a mountain bike route. These topics raise different questions for trip planning: visits to the chapel must be arranged in advance, event dates depend on the particular edition, and the bathing area is available during a specific season.

Romanesque chapel and château in ruins

The Saint-Marcel Chapel is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It was added to the register of historic monuments in 1926. These two dates place different aspects in context: the 12th century refers to its construction, while 1926 marks its later addition to the register. Visits can be arranged by contacting the town hall; the chapel is not open permanently. So arrange your visit with the town hall beforehand and check locally again before your visit.

The Château de Soyans was rebuilt in the first half of the 16th century in the Italian Renaissance style. It has been in ruins since a fire in 1796. The two buildings therefore have distinct histories: a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century and a later Renaissance rebuilding, after which the château’s present state resulted from the fire. Those interested in the buildings’ development can distinguish the chapel’s medieval origins from the château’s later history.

Black truffles and the Journée de la Truffe

Black truffles are harvested in Soyans. A 2021 municipal bulletin describes the Journée de la Truffe as being held annually in February, weather permitting. The ninth edition took place in February 2023. Visitors there could buy plants, truffles and other products from local producers, and watch demonstrations of truffle hunting. These are specific highlights of that edition; if you are planning a trip for the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition in advance.

The connection with truffles is not limited to the event programme: black truffles are harvested in Soyans, while the products on sale and demonstrations were part of a particular edition of the Journée. This distinction is useful when planning your trip around a specific date. The description of the 2023 edition is no substitute for checking a later programme.

Bathing area and mountain bike route

The bathing season at the Roubion de Saou bathing area in Soyans was set for 1 July to 31 August 2026. This period applies to the 2026 season. If you are planning for another year, check the dates in force then rather than assuming these dates still apply.

Another option during your stay is the “Le vieux village de Soyans” mountain bike route. It is open to all mountain bikers and suitable for VTTAE (electric-assist mountain bikes). The bathing area and route address different planning questions: the bathing area has a seasonal operating period, while the route is suited to mountain biking or a VTTAE. This lets you assess each activity according to its own conditions, rather than applying a seasonal date range to both.
