An easy round trip of about one hour and a moderate hike with 325 metres of elevation gain represent two different hiking profiles in Saint-Julien-En-Vercors. There are also trails with historical connections, works of art and distinctive landscape features. Several interests are easy to explore as you plan: a short hike, a greater elevation gain, or a closer look at local history and art.

Hikes with Different Profiles

Le chemin des écoliers is an easy round trip of about 1.8 kilometres. It takes approximately one hour and involves 23 metres of ascent and the same amount of descent. The trail follows paths once used by schoolchildren travelling from the hamlets to the village school. This former use explains the name and gives the hike a specific local connection. Trail conditions may change; check the latest conditions before setting out.

Le Bienveilleur de Bournillon offers a different hiking profile: this moderate round trip is 4.5 kilometres long and involves 325 metres of elevation gain. By comparison, Le chemin des écoliers is described as an easy, roughly one-hour hike with little elevation change, while Le Bienveilleur covers more distance and includes a greater ascent. These differences can help you choose between a short time commitment and a hike with more elevation gain.

The GR de Pays du Vercors Drômois includes a stage from La Chapelle-en-Vercors to Saint-Julien-En-Vercors. The village is therefore also named as a stop on a regional hiking route. The trail by La Porte du Diable passes beneath the rock arch and continues through the Bois de l’Allier.

Landscape Around Moulin Marquis

The hike to Moulin Marquis passes through meadows and woodland, as well as along paths on the hillside. Viewpoints along the route offer views of the surrounding terrain. The hike’s character therefore includes both varied trail environments and views of the landforms. The Cascade de Moulin Marquis has a drop of nearly 400 metres, making it a striking feature of the landscape.

Art and Local History

With its paths once used by schoolchildren, Le chemin des écoliers points to a specific connection between the hamlets and the village school. The works of art also have different associations: La porte des ancêtres was created in 2018 and connects sculptor Jérôme Aussibal’s workshop with the village. Le serpent de lauzes was made in August of the same year during a community workshop. These two works thus highlight different contexts in which they were created.

Partition des oiseaux dates from 2015 and is restored regularly. The Stalagmite de St Julien en Vercors is a limestone formation from the entrance to the Grotte de Barmechinelle. It stands on a stele and is crowned with a cross bearing a crown of thorns. Here, a natural limestone formation meets a religiously inspired motif.
